Jae’lynn Chaney, a plus-size travel blogger based in Vancouver, Washington, has long campaigned for more accommodating airline policies toward passengers of larger sizes. The plus-size traveler has now taken a new step. She has just launched a Change.org petition demanding that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reevaluate its position on the issue.
The petition has received more than 8,000 signatures so far.
The plus-size traveler got a lot of negative comments after she wrote about the petition on her Twitter account.
What do you all think?
I don’t really understand what she wants, besides special treatment and attention We have weight distribution on planes for a reason and if you can’t fit into one seat, well i guess you just have to buy two. It’s not that difficult
Planes have weight limits for a reason. If there is more weight than the engines can push along, then the plane will literally fall out of the sky. Seats were made for the average male at a healthy weight of 180 lbs. If there are 200 seats then that is 36,000 lbs plus the weight of the crew, the cargo and the luggage. Let's say and average planes max weight is 50,000 lbs. If you've got many large people who equal the weight of two men, then we can no longer calculate the weight of the plane accurately and risk is literally falling out of the sky. One of the things the captains do before take off is calculate the weight of the humans, cargo and luggage. There is a reason why you would need to purchase two seats so that they can accurately calculate the weight.
My initial reaction is that this is a way for her to drum up outrage so she can gain attention/followers. Nowadays people know they can leverage being outlandish to get fame. I haven't looked into her or anything, but this seems like something designed to provoke the average normie.
But if it IS her true and honest feelings, no I don't think it makes sense. Very tall people over 6ft don't get free extra legroom.
Like another commenter says, plane seats are designed to fit the average man. I want seats to be made to comfortably seat the average adult.
I'm a short woman - like I'm short compared to the average adult and I'm short compared to the average woman. Plane seats are super uncomfortable for me. There's always a bump pushing my head forward, and my feet don't rest flat of the ground. If seats were made to fit the average person - a 5'7" adult rather than a 5'10" man - then the seats would be cliser to being comfortable for the greatest number of people, like me.
And everyone, me included, want wider seats with more leg room. That's not just a plus-size problem.
In summary, seats need to be wider and shorter. The airlines know this, but they'll never do anything about it because 1) misogyny and the default male, and 2) profits.
If women can lose their sex based rights because it makes predators- in mean males- uncomfortable then I don't see why planes can't accommodate plus size people 😁 they're way more oppressed then fetishes- I mean- dysphoric people.
I had already signed this (and a few others like it recently). Even though she gives me the sense that she's doing it for the attention and followers, I'm all for making the airlines give us better accommodations. We're stuck on those planes, crammed in like sardines even if we all were the ''standard" size they use. I'm tall enough that I have to buy business/first class tickets just so I don't have my knees stuck into the seat in front of me or be forced to encroach on someone else's space by moving my legs to the side. I can do economy+ on 6 hours or less flight, anything more is downright painful. And the amount they charge for just basic knee space on business/first is downright ridiculous.
I applaud anyone taking these companies to task for their ridiculous standards, when it's only going to get worse as the human race slowly gets bigger/taller over time and airlines will continue to make record profits while squeezing us into smaller and smaller seats.
Planes could vary the seats more, sure. They don't all have to be the same size. Designing everyday things to fit all people is always a good idea. This shouldn't just include overweight people though.
I always believe that instead of expecting ppl to adapt you adapt to your own problem. Lose the weight or do some crowd funding to give the airline a budget to build a plane that’s comfortable for bigger travelers.
There was a large obese woman who made her own beauty salon with chairs that could sustain people who are obese. another woman set up her own club where ppl who feel invisible in society and at the club they can mingle and make friends. I could support that because they take matter in their own hands instead of expecting others to adapt and bow down to them.
OP has been coming for fat people lately. It’s getting tedious. Maybe she needs to work on her own self hatred for being overweight rather than broadcasting it to the forum.
