I'm facing eviction from my landlord, and I believe the notice is invalid and retaliatory.
After reporting a dog bite incident from my upstairs neighbor’s dog shortly after moving in, I received an eviction notice under Section 8, accusing me of anti-social behavior. Many of these claims seem misleading, lack evidence or specific dates, and are defamatory, falsely accusing me and my visitors of serious allegations. This is just another instance of harassment I've faced since living here.
Even a police officer found the reasons weak, questioning if the neighbours have connections to the landlord. Upstairs previously agreed to muzzle their dog after the incident, but they haven’t followed through.
It feels like they and the landlord are working together against me since they own their property in a freehold arrangement, while my landlord is primarily concerned about protecting herself and her business.
To protect myself, I installed cameras in communal areas. Since receiving the eviction notice, the neighbors have been taunting me and slamming doors late at night, which is all recorded. Yet, they have accused me of slamming doors. They claim I have been harassing other neighbours outside our apartment block, but I have plenty of video evidence showing I've formed positive relationships with neighbours.
Moreover, there is evidence that they have been watching me in my private garden, as they can see into it from their upstairs window.
A police officer confirmed that I’m allowed to have cameras outside my property for safety, especially after the dog attack; however, my landlord insists I can't have cameras while the neighbors have hidden ones.
In a side note, while reviewing my doorbell camera footage, I noticed that the boyfriend makes his girlfriend do all the heavy lifting—for example, she struggles with a huge waste bin while he just watches, and she carries all the heavy shopping. As a single tenant, I manage all these tasks myself, but if I had a partner, I’d expect him to pull his weight.
The boyfriend seems to be the one instigating intimidation and harassment, and their interactions show no affection or smiles towards each other. He leered at me during our only interaction before the dog attack, which raised my suspicions about him having traits of a malignant narcissist, while his girlfriend appears to be a covert one.
If this goes to court, they will likely come across as foolish and the true perpetrators.
I am taking all necessary steps to hold the neighbours accountable for the dog attack to ensure the safety of others, but I can’t outline those details as it’s an ongoing matter.
Has anyone dealt with a similar experience? I would appreciate any tips or support from the community. Thank you!
I would just move. Ask if you can break the lease with no punishments and just get out of there. It's not worth all the hell you've gone through since moving in.
So let me get this straight—your neighbour's dog bites you and you're getting evicted?? Hell nah. It seems like the landlord and the neighbours are in cahoots like you said. I'd move out of there asap. Wouldn't want to live in such a hostile environment.
Contact your local housing department and set up an appointment to learn more about your right as a tenant. In addition to that have them help you file a case against the landlord.
Any little thing your landlord does contact your case manager and file it. It will help build up your caseload.
Keep all communication with your landlord via email or text.
The goal for them is to kick you out. And they will. Your goal is to have enough evidence so that they PAY YOU to leave. They don't want to go to court and will definitely settle.
On top of settling request a letter from them (The apartment Management Team is usually 3rd Party) stating you were a good and fair tenant just incase your next apartment request one.
And please add an additional camera inside your vehicle.
I had a landlord try to fuck with my family because we were the oldest tenants (+20 yrs). We held off. We collected evidence and we weren't afraid of going to court (make sure they know that). The landlord had to pay us over +$40,000 to walk away lol. This was in 2017 the amount they give you now is not as big but get what you can. Fuck em over for wasting your time.
You don't have to give up your living arrangement because of assholes.
When in court, present as much evidence that you can, including the door slamming, not just to prove they're loud, but to prove that they are accusing you falsely while doing the harm.
You could even threaten to sue over the dog bite. Say you have deeper tissue pain still. If they want to play dirty, you can play dirtier.
If they keep fucking with you, call the cops when they fight, saying you're worried for her. :)
