Hello Queens,
I hope to impart my humble wisdom earned in the trenches of skincare retail.
Here I posit how to resolve what skin type you have, if you are unsure, so that you can build a specialized routine for your skin to flourish accordingly.
First, it is highly unlikely for a person to consistently have a single skin type for their whole lives. I regularly saw customers whose skin types changed due to life events like aging, stress, dietary changes, pregnancy, severe illness, etc.
Second, your choice in skincare products is best made when you know why you are using the item.
I cannot tell you how many people I met that had no clue why they included certain products in their routines, & then wonder why they had problems with their skin.
This is why it is important to know how to check your skin type.
The general skin types to check for are dry, combination, & oily.
There are two criterion that assist in the precise determination of a specific type: the hydration test and the oil test.
Hydration tests can be a bit difficult to get as an average consumer. However, they can be helpful in ruling out root causes of existing issues if you are shrewd. Some skincare retail brands offer it. Dermatologists can be the most likely source for them.
For this post, I intend to share the a home-adapted version of the oil test, which will absolutely help with at least 90% of the concerns I commonly saw in my former line of work.
Oil Test needs:
facial cleanser
printout of face diagram with squares on
forehead
nose
Cheeks
Chin
Non-latex/latex gloves
oil blotting papers
step 0: plan in advance to clean your face gently the evening before you sleep. Go to sleep barefaced .
step 1: wake up leisurely enough to not immediately wash your face. You now have your prime test conditions.
step 2: place gloves on. the goal is to not let your fingerprints affect your results. step 3: open the oil blotting papers.
step 4: lie on a horizontal surface to best permit yourself to place the blotting sheets gently on your face in the sections of your face indicated by the face diagram.
step 4: press the squares gently to your face with gloved hands.
step 5: after 10-15 seconds gently remove each paper from your face and place them on the diagram in identical locations to where they were placed on your face. For example, the paper placed on your forehead goes on the forehead location in your diagram.
Step 6: once all papers are removed and in their diagram places, make note of the blotting papers that are transparent enough to let in light when individually held up to your nearest light source.
if the paper is transparent that indicates a spot of your face that has oil production.
if the paper is not transparent and otherwise unaltered, that spot of your skin doesn’t produce much oil or any oil at all.
If none of the papers are transparent or darkened at all, then you have a dry skin type.
if some of the papers have transparent spots and others don’t, you are combination skin type.
if all of the papers are transprent or darkened then you are oily skin type.
will try to post links here soon.
Love this info, thank you!
