This is something kind of silly that just occurred to me so please don’t take it too seriously. You know how misogynistic men think it’s a devastating insult when they tell us that we’re going to wind up alone with 14 cats?
First of all, what’s wrong with cats? I love cats, but am unfortunately allergic.
Second of all, does anyone else notice the trend of 30+ single men getting a dog and then making the dog their sole companion, more important than anything else in their life? First line in their OLD profile is something like “Looking for a mom for my dog” or “I will never love you more than my dog.” I often see men who have given up on dating say things like “I am just going to focus on myself and my dog.” No mention of family or friends… just him and his dog.
My mom just called me to tell me she saw an older man driving around in a sports car with a large dog sitting in the passenger seat where normally a wife or girlfriend would be. She's in her 70s and said she's never seen such a thing before and thought it was very funny.
Jokes aside, I do think this hyper-focus on pets as replacement for human companionship is a relatively new phenomenon and it really fascinates me. At the same time it really worries me, but I love people enough that I don't see it ever happening to me thankfully.
This is not meant to be a dig at dogs or dog lovers. I know people love their pets and that’s totally normal, but some of these men seem to take it to a whole new level. It’s just another example of how we see them winding up with the same fate that they predict for us. Meanwhile, I have never seen any woman be nearly as obsessive over their cat(s) as I have seen men obsess over dogs.
I honestly think the crazy cat lady trope is simply a continuation of "independent women who don't need men = evil, cat owning witches".
I'm completely serious. The classic European "witch" with the pointy hat, black cat and cauldron stirring actually stems from women dominating the beer brewing business in the early middle ages and being economically independent from men and we obviously couldn't have that, right? The pointy or big hat was for more visibility in market places, the cats were to keep mice and rats out of the grain used for brewing and the cauldron was obviously for brewing the beer.

Dogs are associated with men, and cats are associated with women, and men hate women and things that remind them of us. They "threaten" us with cats forgetting that we dont hate women or womanly things the way they do. I barf at men who think they're going to lure me in by using my (alleged, non-existant) nurturing instincts against me, saying they want me to be their dog's "mom". Wtf?
Yes, the ubiquitous dog dud(e)s are really fucking tiresome. I downloaded Hinge quite recently for research purposes (my hypothesis that yes, it really IS that bad out there was confirmed within ten minutes) and one of the most disgustingly memorable profiles was that of a dog guy kissing his dog ON THE MOUTH. That was the point at which I decided I'd had enough. Mid-ugly app bros expecting us to compete with fucking dogs now! My sides were truly splitting. Thanks for letting us know right up front that you'll treat that dog better than you'll ever treat a woman. And I mean - IMAGINE the humiliation of being triangulated with a dog. No fucking thanks. 🖕🏻
I have totally replaced a possible male partner with my pooch who I adore. It's a bit tragic, but men haven't levelled up to the point where I want any of them, so c'est la vie. My pooch and I have a great life together.
Yes, you're absolutely right: the crazy cat lady trope is just another misogynistic slur they can throw at us, and a complete double standard given what you have observed - men shacking up with dogs after a certain age, a phenomenon for which there is no equivalent derogatory term.

I can’t help it! They’re just so sweet! I got that a lot on dating apps when men would comment about me having cats, they’d tell me that I’ve just given up or call me a crazy cat lady. It’s so stupid!

There's a difference though. Men are getting dogs because they can't get women. It's not that men don't want women, they're obsessed with women. But as more and more women become financially independent, they don't want to put up with abuse from LV and NV men. They actually have a choice now, unlike back in the day. And women are choosing to stay alone with their pets because men are unwilling to become decent human beings and partners. I do worry for the dogs because men abuse animals as well, their abuse is not limited to women & children. Women have social networks like friends, church groups and family. They gets pets because they love animals and choose to have pets. Men get dogs to compensate for their loneliness. It's male projection at its finest.
Ha! I have noticed this as well. A lot of these men act like dogs are somewhat more superior to cats, I guess it’s the more masculine pet to own? Whatever. I’ve also interacted with a few men that seem to be obsessed with their cats for what it’s worth!

 Post divorce, I have spent the past several years online dating and the more know men, the more I love pets.
At least pets are grateful for your presence, don’t talk down to you, or really expect much at all.
There’s a certain type of person who is more bonded to their dog because they lack the social skills to healthily navigate a relationship. They say things like “dogs love unconditionally”, “dogs are loyal”, “dogs will never let you down” and act like dogs have superpowers that can tell if you’re a good or a bad person. They take their dogs everywhere and treat it better than their own children and spouses.
Interestingly notorious serial killers and dictators like Hitler were all obsessed with their dogs. It suggest to me what they really want is an obedient creature that gives them attention no matter what kind of person they are. It’s more about control. They don’t want to put in the effort to be better to attract a woman but expect to be accepted and worshipped as they are because they feel entitled to it.
Also just wanted to say some men take their dog love too far. I don’t know if anyone watches “Love in Paradise“ on tlc, it’s a 90 day fiancé type show, but there was a guy that is OBSESSED with his dog and showers with his dog 😂
