I think a lot of them are unemployed. When they do get a job I'm sure male privilege had a big hand in giving them one. I've heard stories of men flunking interviews and still being hired, with women failing despite preparing and doing objectively very well.

A friend of mine is looking for a new job right now and kind of discouraged because it is taking some time. We looked up who got the jobs and grants she was rejected for so far online for fun last weekend (small, very specialized academic field, so it's quite easy). A man got the job or grant every single time. You can't tell me that's a coincidence and the man was the best candidate every single time when men are actually slightly underrepresented when you look at who studies that subject. But sure, it's completely logical that around 70% of the students are women but then men are vastly overrepresented when it comes to who gets the jobs and grants later.

That's so sad. I hope your friend doesn't lose hope and eventually finds her ideal job in a company that works well for her.

I've seen the same in my own field - most people who qualify are women but for some reason it's the men who always hold the top jobs and keep getting hired despite often being borderline incompetent.

I think pickmeism definitely has a hand, along with male privilege and men helping each other while making things harder for women. There are women out there who would rather hire a man than another woman - something that makes absolutely no sense to me. As a woman you know how hard it is for women and surely, if you made it to the top yourself, you'd want to help other women to do that.

Honestly, if I had my own company, I'd avoid hiring men for anything other than menial, low paid jobs on personal principle.
