When I was a kid, I didn't realize how much sexist and toxic messages I was internalizing about my own sex/gender. I still listen to rap music that isn't misogynistic these days; but it's not easy finding hip hop artists that steer clear of degrading women. Folks who say hip hop doesn't have a misogyny problem are delusional. It's just so common to hear derogatory comments towards females in rap that it's considered normal when it shouldn't be...
Tyler the creator is proof queer rappers can be misogynistic too, lmao. Imagine how many poor women he used sexually and discarded before coming to terms with the fact that he wants to fuck men and just hates women in general. (I support queer men, just not assholes). And although he's talented, he's not fond of women. Neither is Eminem or most other men in hip hop. Just crazy to me how nearly no one blinks an eye when misogyny is in someone's song compared to when they hear racism or ableism. It's like people get enraged over all types of injustice sometimes EXCEPT the normalized misogyny and violence against women...
And you get called racist if you talk about it. The implication, I guess, is that the misogyny in hip hop is essential to black culture, which is, I think, pretty fucking racist. Like oh gee, I'm such a racist because I think black women deserve better than the treatment they get from so many male rappers. Shame on me.
Misogyny is just normal culture. Sadly. I love Eminems beat and music but I can't listen to him anymore. It's sad
I cringe when I think of the rap I used to listen to. From Eminem to Lil' Kim- all of it was so degrading to women.
Thank God I grew up being a Swiftie and I still am one. I never really got that big into rap, but my skin crawls every time I hear about its misogynistic lyrics
I never liked rap. I was never into degrading and dirty lyrics. Makes my ears dirty 😒
Tupac. I loved some of his songs so much when they came out. But then I began paying attention to the lyrics and noticed how he flip-flops a lot on being sexist. its like, the lyrics are sexist but then sometimes he calls out men for being horrible even though he has said some pretty sexist things.
he’s all “why do we hate our women, why do we rape our women” ok, good job calling that out.
”thats why I f’d your bitch”
ok wait a minute here.
”I can make you cum 61 times”
ummm nice if you can I guess that is cool if you’re thinking about the woman’s pleasure?
”im getting pussy but you’re getting dick, it’s a fair exchange”
ok now I am confused again. Do you hate women or do you love them?
“you wonder why they call you bitch” is in my opinion the worst one of his songs.
damnit I really want to love Tupac but I think his lyrics seem really gaslight-ey. There’s a lot more that made me stop and go wait what did he mean by this string of lyrics or dang that is sexist. I just can’t think of them all, the lyrics kinda ruined it where I can’t listen to him anymore.
If you ever listen to the “blowjob Betty” song by too short, damn I grew up with that one but I cannot deal with it at this point. I am convinced it is the most depraved song made for men that I have ever heard
