Hi friends, I just wanted to paste my reply on YouTube to some recommended video in my algorithm from a pick-me YouTuber (leaving her anonymous because we should never WASTE time/energy giving a platform to those who abuse it) who claims men are more oppressed than women. NEVER waste any of your time watching any misogynistic content online. Clapping back is also not worth it. The only reason I stumbled upon the video and felt disgusted enough to write this refutation is that I could not find a single intelligent reply in the comments, probably because those sexists are all dumbasses. ***Disclaimer: Of course, anyone who educates themselves and values critical thinking will know that the claim of "men are more oppressed than women" is incredibly ignorant and wrong.
My Reply to the example of "men being oppressed by being forced to go to war":
And who told men to go to war? OTHER MEN and male-dominated governments. The patriarchy hurts men with such toxic masculinity, but this is NOT oppression from women. Women have NEVER oppressed men. Let's not forget genital mutilation + sexual assault + disproportionately higher levels of domestic violence, lacking the right to abortion (every woman ought to be entitled the right to do whatever with her body), lacking the right to education — especially for STEM-related roles, and lacking the same rights to financial mobility: these are all issues that men have perpetuated against women, and this is JUST THE BEGINNING of a laundry list of such issues. I believe in fighting for both women's and men's rights, but let's never forget that MEN HAVE NEVER BEEN OPPRESSED by women. Women, on the other hand, have been oppressed by men.
***Also, the consequence of going to war is irrelevant here when we are discussing oppression. I could easily say, "women don't deserve the right to work because work creates mental health problems" just like saying "women were lucky to not go to war because war causes death." Benevolent sexism or the infantilization of women is STILL OPPRESSION. It denies women the SAME FREEDOM IN CHOICES as men. MANY WOMEN wanted to fight for their country, one of them being the celebrated computer scientist and pioneer Grace Hopper. She tried to enlist in the U.S. army but was discriminated against and rejected for her gender.
War generates a net negative for society, while labor generates a net positive. But whether or not something positive/negatively affects society is irrelevant here because we are focusing on women's ability to make CHOICES in life. *Not to mention, there have been studies that show how women leaders are, on average, more peaceful than men leaders. It is because of a culture that rewards global "masculinity" (and yes I'm aware masculinity and femininity are constructs) that some women also felt the need to force themselves to support violence in the name of trying to dehumanize themselves as much as possible a.k.a. by trying to get picked as pickmeism was key to survival in a pre-aware globe (before the existence of feminism).
Not to mention that men aren't currently being forced to go to war (in the US anyway). But women are still dealing with domestic violence, rape, discrimination at work, etc.
The people who say that men are "more oppressed" are always reaching for extremely rare scenarios ("false rape accusations"), scenarios that no longer apply today ("being forced to go to war") or scenarios that they heavily benefit from ("it's less okay for men to cry", yes but that's because men are generally viewed as stronger and less emotional and being viewed that way gives them more job opportunities, higher salaries and gets them treated with more respect in life overall).
