If you are not a misogynist, you will not be offended by my words. The most common argument these misogynists will use is, "just watch something else. Don't watch/consume this media if you are bothered by it." Here is my response:
The show could have great substance, plot, everything good EXCEPT its objectification and dehumanization of women. You cannot force people to boycott shows that are meaningful. A boycott completely misses the core of the issue — the media-makers need to stop objectifying and dehumanizing women. (Also, women audiences tend to have a crucial role in being aware of / pointing out misogynist microaggressions in the media they consume, so no there is actually less of a chance of change in media spaces if the men and women in power make these spaces a male-only space, which would reinforce a misogynistic echo chamber.) Rather, because the objectification and dehumanization of women will persist unless there is a change in behavior from the macro-level or from decision-makers who have power, the media-makers and controllers have an obligation to institute new norms that respect women's bodies and inner depth. New norms could include asking women film and media reviewers to constructively criticize the camera shots of the show or media before its release, with the producers and decision-makers revising their work based on those women's feedback.
The objectification and dehumanization of women under the male gaze is actually IMMORAL. I will explain this: When media repeatedly unclothes women against her will to appeal to a male audience; when media repeatedly depicts women wearing clothing they are uncomfortable in or that they would not realistically wear in the contexts/situations at hand; when media repeatedly zooms in on body parts of women or tries to make non-sexual situations sexual — media ends up subliminally reinforcing the misogynist and dehumanizing idea that women exist for men. Media ends up creating another generation of violent incels, or men who think that women owe them sexual attraction and will mistreat women in real life to get such "attraction" when the reality is that women owe men nothing. Women are our own creative agents and free human beings. We exist for ourselves. We have ambitions and a hell of a lot of character.
One of the worst things is when you're watching a good film or series and half way through a random half naked woman appears for literally no good reason. Nothing to do with the plot. Just random dehumanisation and objectification of women to appeal to a scrotey male audience. It puts me off to the point that it ruins the whole experience.
A couple of years ago this happened when I went to see a film with my friend. It was a pretty interesting action/mystery until the random obligatory objectification. We just looked at each other like 🙄.
We shouldn't have to put up with this. A campaign against it would be a great start. Raising awareness and just standing up for our right to be taken seriously and respected in the media. To this day I've never seen a film in which a man was pictured in a degrading stance, half naked as the camera zoomed in on his genitals. So much for libfem 'eQuAlitY'
