Obviously Love is Blind is selling narratives and scripts on the down low about the desirability and rewards of " love" along with dramatic hooks that make this show so profitable/binge worthy.
However watching the last 3 episodes of season 4 left me with major ick. Literally for me there's nothing I saw (even with the so-called "couple goals" couple) that wasn't repulsive on some level to me. Like what happens to all of them when that haze of feelings they're calling "love" subsides? Do they really even like each other? Are they off camera building solid friendships based on actual reality?
It's a given that Love is Blind is vapid and based on norms and stereotypes that are constantly being challenged and debunked in many radical feminist spaces.
However there's certainly a part of me (as a fellow human to these reality stars) that feels deeply an uncomfortable sense of pity for all those cast members.
The ones who "won" that got married really didn't get the prize that they seem to think they have imo. Tbh the whole reality show route to "find love" the cost far exceeds what any of those women got.
My lesson is that my standards and expectations for love/relationship have nothing to do with what can be produced and packaged up for some kind of show- that includes the public demonstrations of love, affection and happiness that non reality show people put on for themselves, friends, family and the community/ outside world that is used as justification for the status quo.
The whole erasure of individual self of each person that is necessary to achieve a "couple vibe" that I see in this show and the unstated declaration that the entity created by this union is THE GOAL. I just can't.
I'm not seeing relationships represented that I can aspire or desire and now realize that the basic reason I watch is shadenfreud. My bad.
There's a YouTuber named Jarvis Johnson that rips that show apart, it's so fake , the cast is treated like shit and they sleep in weird campers and most of the couples really don't last long. Netflix just needed a cow to milk, love isn't blind lol.
