I’m all for female liberation and equality, but at what point do you draw the line? Especially with what is okay for minors to participate in.
I work with minors and there’s a heatwave in my city. Girls as young as 13 are showing up with no bra. I had this one girl show up in a loose shirt but she didn’t button her blouse and left three buttons undone. Her whole boob was hanging out. An older women told her to button her blouse and she started citing the “free the nipple” movement. 😩😫
I wanted to say that at this point, it’s not about freeing the nipple, it’s the fact that you are a minor. Furthermore, there are predators that will take advantage of your state of attire. In addition, if you want to be a feminist, there are other ways to expressing feminism. For example, the women’s march, supporting various feminist artists by buying their clothes and designs.
If it was possible to desexualize women's breasts in our generation, I'd support it. But the fact of the matter is when you search the hashtag #freethenipple the search result is porn, and our society's standard on sexual conduct (protecting women from predators!) is regressing. I remember being a teen and having a child's view on the reality of womanhood. "Free the nipple" doesn't mean show up shirtless or dress inappropriately, especially as a minor.
Yea, in a porn infested society (this is global btw) it's almost impossible for women's bodies to not be sexualized. I always thought free the nipple was about a mother's right to breastfeed in public should she need to. Not about displays of nudity
There’s nothing wrong with not wearing a bra. Men will sexualize us regardless so we might as well dress as we want, and bras can be very uncomfortable.
It actually makes me sad. I WISH it was possible to be in public around without a bra or breastfeed or sunbathe or swim topless without being sexualized or harrassed. But it's not.
At the moment "free the nipple" is just a way to give more targets to sick perverts who will leer at and harrass them. They are the ones profiting from this, not women.
Wear a bra or don't. I don't care either way.
The reason why it's deemed "feminist" is because men like it and it's easy to do. No struggle needed, and men won't pushback on it. It's just another example of how feminism has become man-centered. It's not about power and it's not empowering.
Want power? Want equality? Do the hard work in areas where we need progress: porn, prostitution, online harrassment, DV, sex crimes, TV/Movies/Novels (how many are actually pro-woman without being "sex-positive" or depict some fairy-tale romance?), housing, child care, Climate Change! (I'm sure I'm missing some areas, please feel free to comment and add your own.)
Go to law school, get a STEM degree, write novels, get into directing/producing/cinematography, run for office, be an example for other women in your daily life.
What else is power? Money, being financially stable, having that FU money to walk away so you don't have to defend abusers in court, you don't need to be a pick-me or side with men to keep your job. Become incorruptible. (No offense to women just starting out or have had difficulties. Those of us who can, should do, so we can help every woman.)
Another source of power is having healthy relationships. This takes *work* for those who grew up in dysfunctional or abusive environments, but it's worth it because it's an enormous source of protection for women.
All of these require time, dedication and work. This is not an exhaustive list, but just a place for you to start thinking about power.
Hey, we'll free the nipple when men stop sexually harassing women.
Seriously. If you walk down the street in my country with no bra on, men will hoot, holler and catcall you. Hence why we don't do it.
Unfortunately women are being sexualized now more than ever so free the nipple wouldn’t make me comfortable simply because of the disgusting men around, even women sexualizing other women. That’s why I dress more modestly. Those scrotes don’t get to enjoy my body. Even with it I sell get stares, looks and men flirting but still, it would be worse if I was showing more cleavage honestly. I just don’t want to feel uncomfortable
Free the nipple is as useless as the slutwalk and freebleeding. There's nothing wrong with being braless, but I don't want to see some child's bare boob ewww. I don't even wanna see an adult titty Not everything is for minors, but when you point that out you're being accused of being a pedo and sexualizing them. I don't think teenagers should be frolicking around in thong bikinis and stripper heels, but that somehow makes me the villain lmao
Uh. Hm. Yeah, I don’t generally wear a bra unless I’m working out and don’t think it’s inherently sexual to not wear a bra. I do think it’s weird that minors want their full breasts out tho and that’s due to porn, not a desire to breastfeed in public without harassment. Minors shouldn’t have to wear bras, but their boobs shouldn’t be out either.
Free the nipple might work as a movement if it were older women swaying around in the grocery store or the workplace but when young girls participate (who are going to be sexualized no matter what they do) they end up making things worse.
I totally get the hatred of bras for some women, especially in the summer, when it gets hot. Going braless but wearing those stick-on silicon nipple covers could be a good compromise for those who don't like wearing bras but also don't want to give a free show to scrotes. Pornified scrotes are wanting to see hard nipples poking through a shirt, because it's taboo and makes them horny---it isn't the breast mound of flesh that thrills them nearly as much. Hence why such a big deal is made out of seeing a woman's hard nipples in public. But this way, they don't get to see that, but your boobs will get a break from being trussed up in a sweaty bra. #freethenipplecheatthescrote
I, for one, have never left home without a bra as that would be a crime against physics, and not once has that stopped me from being stared at constantly by entitled scrotes so I don't see this as being a thing. Tbh it just sounds like jealousy especially when people start talking about "young white women wanting to show off" jealousy and racism is all I smell
To me, this whole movement reads like a bad libfem, middle class comedy. The reason it gets so much attention is because men love any opportunity to sexualise and objectify women, constantly adding to their neverending porn stash. Yeah, men will creep and perv on you even if you cover every piece of skin and any possible shape. But why give them extra opportunity? Not to mention that you're potentially jeopardising your safety and ability to move up at work / be taken seriously in the workplace in the process. As for going without a bra for comfort, there's a clear divide here between women with smaller and larger cup sizes. If I was smaller I'd probably avoid wearing bras as long as you couldn't tell through my clothes. But as I'm larger I literally can't go without a bra because no matter what I wear, people would be able to tell. And I don't fancy back ache just to prove a point.
