Let's call her "Maria" ... so my college roomate Maria is engaged and planning her wedding.
Maria was definitely the type of woman that would be called "way too picky." She was extremely conservative and very religious and was firm on what she believed in. Now me and Maria didn't see eye to eye on things, but she was always respectful of my views and never argued or tried to push me to follow her views. She had a sense of maturity. She came from a large, close knit, family. She was more of an old soul - she wasn't too interested in social media, technology, partying, or trends. She liked sports, being outdoors, playing cards, and reading especially with her family. She loved going to church and was very active in volunteering with them and with anything that gave back. She was responsible and people often found her "boring" at school. Some even commented that she dressed "like an old lady" and fussed that she didn't really wear makeup, and didn't do much with her hair. She was always clean and well groomed, she just didn't follow the beauty trends and preferred looking natural and modest. She struggled to find anyone in college and was often told she would never find a man that had values like hers and that no man would practice celibacy until marriage.
Anyways she became more interested in dating after she got settled into her career in Healthcare. She knew exactly what sort of man she wanted - she set her standards and wouldn't compromise on them.
And she's 31 and going to be married soon. She found a man that met all of her standards. He also comes from a religious and tight knit family, and shares her same political views. He's in good shape, has a great career he enjoys, and owns his own home. He practices celibacy like she does and they're waiting for marriage. He's handsome too. Maria was okay with being single and used that time to stand firm for what her standards are, worked on herself, built a career, and healthy lifestyle. And notably, she didn't waste her time on men that didn't meet them. She kept it moving.
The Point of the story is Maria didn't stoop to acting like a pickme and she didn't have to settle for less. She stayed true to herself and still was able to find a man that does seem high value and met her standards. He loves her for her.
This is a reminder for everyone that your standards are never too high - even if you're like Maria and that it may feel "impossible" or "unrealistic" in today's world. I don't know the details about them further though so I hope she isn't gonna become a pickme wife or anything like that.
I didn't expect this to have a happy ending but the family supporting her definitely caused her to have self worth and prevented the pick me pipeline legacy from pick me moms and closeted misogynistic dads
I hope she won’t become a pickme wife too but well done to her. I’m super proud of women who stand firm on their beliefs and don’t give in to society’s rules that only aim to harm women. She’s my idol 👏
