Hugh controlled the narrative about himself. He had a grip on media somehow. He bragged about being able to kill negative stories. The tv show pushed playboys claims that the women had good lives, were pursuing careers & educations. It focused on some of them getting advanced college degrees & were taking advantage of career opportunities in print & tv media. You wondered at Bridgette’s age & how she could put up with that when older. She was married for several years after she moved in with Hef. Maybe she had an abusive husband & this was a way out. I’m just guessing. But also 28 year old women get pulled into bad stuff too just not as easily. The show played an innocent spin to this. It mostly showed them taking trips, going out to dinner, taking care of their dogs, or making photo essays. I didn’t expect to like the show, but I did. I wasn’t surprised when they came out with the ugly truth after he died. Hugh Hefner managed to keep them quiet until he died. They all had contracts & NDA’s. I thought most of the women said they thought it sounded like an easy way to have a comfortable life while having a career in modeling or pursuing an education & of course were too innocent to imagine what weird perversions he was into. The show presented it like it was a big happy relationship. Hugh was accused of all this stuff be he denied the worst if it and insisted he ran a business beneficial to women. It was a lie and I’m not even vaguely surprise & few of us are. The look on Barbie Benton’s face said it all when Holly said she wanted Barbie to move back in. Hef pulled Barbie away from medical school. She could have had a better life if she never met him.

I remember when I first stumbled upon my father’s stack of Playboys. The girls all looked so beautiful and glamourous. I never felt like it was dirty, just pretty ladies showing their bodies. There was no sex, no denigration, they looked so happy. Big smiles in every picture.
Every do often I still get told by men that I look like I could be a playboy bunny (the big fake boobs and blonde hair dont hurt), and I still instinctively take it as such a compliment.
So sad to hear about how bad it was behind the scenes.
