Ok so let me explain.
I have been into hip hop production since I was in college, and I have been a hiphop fan ever since my older brother showed me T.I in the 2000s.
My favorite artists are gucci mane, jeezy, ti, and future, but I also like some of the newer hiphop artists.
I understand that a lot of them are misogynistic, and toxic, but I try to separate the art from the artists.
An example I would like to use is if a black person loves classic country, even though many classic country artists from the 40s/50s would likely be extremely racist, and not kind to black people.
Would anyone like to give an opinion?
You listening to the music, attending their events, and posting about them gives these artists the attention and income to keep the momentum to do these trifling things. Would it be better to support people who benefit others.
The pick me cool girl thinks that she doesn't mind being called a bitch, it's not serious anyway. She doesn't take hearing about women being sluts and whores personally, it's just art. <<< I used to think that way and I let exes call me bitch and cunt "jokingly". Well, they hated me for real and had zero respect for me.
Delving into feminism more is the only thing that got me out of that mindset. Now I have little tolerance for hearing these things in media, they are disrespectful and degrading. They make me feel sick to my stomach.
Just think about the messages in the songs you listen to--do they uplift and empower you? It's music, and you are entitled to your own tastes. Sometimes I will like a song by a particular artist that has a great message and then they release one that's a bit "pickme"--so I choose not to listen to that track.
At the end of the day the defining feature of a pickme is how she thinks and behaves, musical taste isn't really relevant.
There are plenty of independent women making great hip hop who you can enjoy and support.

yes it is
also some of the men you mentioned are very low value no offense. Gucci Mane was almost a forever boyfriend with Keisha Kaior and but her through the ringer before marrying her. he is the embodiment of struggle love. T.I is a weirdo he literally goes in his daughters gyno appointments to check if she is a virgin. no beat is that good to make me want to listen to him. there is a difference between separating art and enabling someone that perpetuate harm on women. and chile, don’t get me started on future he is a father of 8 with no wife in his 30s. i’m not a spiritual person but do you truly want those people to be playing with that energy in your ears. so many of their lyrics suggest that women are disposable and idk about you but after listening to that it would affect my psyche.
these artists often fetishize non black woman and see black women, especially darkskin black women as less than human. they also tend to be abusers and normalize domestic violence. these men also tend to have no value in marriage and are SERIAL baby fathers. they also idolize violence, drug trafficking, non monogamy, ride or die culture while singing about treating women like doormats. i feel really gross after listening to it especially how they talk about ghosting and cheating as if it’s normal. so try to listen to women more because honestly mens rap is so redundant and reinforces so many bad stereotypes on black women/ women in general.
I've never been able to listen to rap because of the lyrics. The beats are amazing. It pisses me off that they have to be so misogynistic. It's such a powerful art form, and this is how it's being used?
The thing is - the music industry produces what sells. If you are streaming these artists, they are making money, so they will produce more of it. (This applies to all genres, btw. Country music has a bro problem, and I haven't listened to the current artists in years.)
Honestly, it's up to you, but I think we have an obligation to not support this stuff, and instead support women artists, especially those outside the mainstream.
Coming back to this...Looking at it from a power perspective - part of how we use our power is what we pay attention to. We block and delete those not worthy of our time. How is music different?
I think we give away our power when we give our attention to anything that degrades us as individuals or as a group. And giving our power to that trash, creates more of it, that influences our culture, which turns around and treats us like trash.
Part of FDS is realizing that we have power, and using that power for female benefit, yours, mine and ours.
Imagine those awesome beats, but with lyrics that lift women up! There's no reason we can't have that. We should demand it actually.
There are a handful of songs that, lyrically, leave a lot to be desired but the track and melody override that. You feel it in your bones. If ur a real hip hop head, you know what I mean. I draw the line at violence against women. Sometimes a bop is just a bop. There is tons of good hip hop, but those aren’t the songs that get rotation. and that’s by design (it’s a deeper conversation that I won’t get into here).
And people can listen to all the enlightened, women empowerment music they want and still go home to a nasty ass LVM and treat people like crap. People do anything to seem woke nowadays, so I'm skeptical of everybody
How is that remotely the same? Classic country artists aren’t singing racial slurs in their music. No self respecting black person would listen to white artists calling them slurs but women stay making excuses for misogynistic men. This is why misogyny will never die. These men should be “cancelled” like white people get cancelled for using racial slurs.
I listen to that music too, so I understand.
I think you're a pickme if you gaslight people who call out the misogyny in that music by acting like it's "no big deal" it's "just a song". Songs have a lot of influence so it is a big deal. But if you listen to the music because you like the beat or something but you're willing to own up to the fact that the lyrics are problematic, that's not pickme behavior to me.
I listen to hip hop because I like the beat and the flow, but I just ignore the lyrics. If I could find hip hop songs with a great beat that doesn't have these lyrics I would listen to it, but it seems like the best beats go to the most problematic artists so it's hard. I listen to it but I go out of my way to not give these misogynistic artists my money, like I wouldn't go to their concert or buy their songs or stream their music on spotify etc.
I also have this dilemma bc I just like to dance and wild out to trash music sometimes lol! But then I’m reminded that what they say would be considered hate speech were it targeted at anyone else and it holds me back from hitting play most of the time
If that’s the kind of music you like then listen to that music. But also be aware of how listening to misogynistic words affect your mental state. If you are able to ignore it then I don’t see the issue.
I think a pick-me would not examine her own faults or the things she enjoys, whether they are toxic or not. I think potentially you could continue to listen to these artists as long as you are willing to examine the misogyny and other issues reflected in their art
🤡
If you like future something is really wrong with you. TI is a whole rapist. Gucci Mane is a convicted criminal. Just ew.
I don't think so. I enjoy some future music, but very vocal about how much I hate him as a person. It's pick me behavior when it's all you listen to and you support their personal life choices. In most cases I do separate the music from the artist 🤷🏾♀️ most male musicians and producers cheat and have harems, most female artists cater to the male gaze and have pick me music. And this spans across all genres. I really hate that this conversation mainly surrounds hip hop, when white dominated genres are also incredibly misogynistic and toxic. The whole industry is full of talented, problematic people that don't know how to act when they get some coins and notoriety. Y'all are gonna have to pry the Weeknd, Lana Del Rey, Summer Walker and Beyonce from my cold dead hands, sorry 🤣😭. Kendrick recently admitted to cheating on his HS sweetheart/forever gf. It's shitty, but she's still with him so his music is going to stay on my phone 🤷🏾♀️ I draw the line when it comes to DV, siding with abusers, and sexual assault. I got rid of the 2 Tory Lanez songs I liked, removed Trey Songz and Chris brown from my liked songs a long time ago. I haven't listened to DaBaby in forever b/c it was too sexist or King Von b/c he was basically a serial killer upon further research...very low vibrational😬
You can listen to whatever you want. Read that again.
