Ugh, I’m so sick of this. The above screenshot is a comment that was left on a video on 74 Gear’s YouTube channel. That’s a channel about aviation and aviation-related things that’s run by a pilot (it's pretty good, if you're into that sort of thing). For context, this comment was in response to a video he had made where he created two fake Tinder profiles to test whether pilots really get the most matches, as he had apparently been told by a coworker (turns out, they don’t), and in it he made a throwaway joke about being rejected. So of course there were several pick-mes in the comments talking about how THEY would date him, and how THEY think he’s SUPER HOT 🙄.
Now, not to direct any shade at the guy that runs the channel (he seems like a decent human being, and I find most of his videos to be funny and informative), but good looks are not a quality that he possesses. Nor has he ever claimed to be good-looking; he seems pretty accepting of reality. He has sort of a self-deprecating style of humor in his videos, but not one that comes off as self-pitying, or like he’s fishing for compliments, which makes the women leaving comments like this look like absolute fools. Especially the part where she says “if I was more attractive”—girl, how attractive do you need to be to date a skinny bald ginger with no eyebrows???
I actually feel second-hand embarrassment when I read comments like this. Why do so many women feel like they need to stroke the egos of their male parasocial relationships? It’s bad enough they do it with the men they know IRL. But they don’t even KNOW this man, and it was in response to what was pretty obviously meant to be a joke. Girl, stand up.
I'm a flight attendant, and I interact with pilots daily.
A lot of them get their commercial licence while studying part time, which gives you the confirmation that it is as doable as any academic degree course that can be done parttime.
The job has its own challenges, you gotta sit in one place for long hours without falling asleep since most of the flying is automatic and you just need to stay alert to radio messages and changes that are needed in the system. Of course there are other challenges as well. However, many of them end up having a HUGE effin ego and really enjoy looking down on women, act like assholes in restaurants and of course constantly want unlimited attention because they thing it's justified.
But since their job is so glamorous and they wear a uniform, people tend to turn a blind eye to how stupid they might be.
I work for an eCommerce website specialized in aerospace and aviation supplies, and you'd be surprised how easy it is to become a pilot. Most of the old boomer men who order from us do not know how to use a website or send an email, etc... but they know how to fly a plane??
Edit: I'd also like to add that my high school ROTC program taught students how to fly a plane, and they each got to take turns flying one (not just flight simulators--actual planes). They have since discontinued the program, but if high school students can be trusted flying a plane, it is most certainly something anyone can do with a little training.
