I was out playing with my Rottweiler in an empty field in my neighborhood. A house close to the field has dog owners who insist on letting their poodle run loose, barking at passersby.
This time the dog came to the field where my dog and I were playing(it stayed about 50 ft away just barking in our direction) The owner called it to come back and it wouldnt. His body language suggested that he was hesitant to chase his dog since it would probably run. He ended up having to have a second person with a pole help him get control of his dog.
And he had the nerve to shout at me "why are you just standing there? If you see someone's dog near you, you should keep walking."
I told him that he should worry about HIS own dog. Mine was under mg control the whole time and completely ignored him and his animal.
This pisses me off because I have every right to use the field (just like anyone else). He is just mad that his dog exposed how little control he has over it.
But angry scotes can be dangerous. And they can easily tell where I live since it's nearby.
FDS readers, what are good ways to handle this in the future? Should I bother to speak up again or just ignore them? I dont love the idea of hiding, but I can walk different routes to use the same area.
And since this loose dog is always loose, what should I do if it ever comes closer to me and my dog? This rude, irresponsible owner is likely to cause problems if I hit his dog in self defense.
Where I’m from, if an owner is not able to control their pet and it bites someone, no questions asked, the dog gets put down, and the owner may face punitive charges.
On two separate occasions, the dogs from my neighbourhood were put down due to irresponsible owners.
A pit bull bit my uncle and left puncture wounds. My uncle sued the owner and the dog was put down.
A year ago, a bunch of drug induced junkies moved into the house next door, and it’s been chaos. For three straight months, their three dogs constantly shits on our side of the parking lot. It always shits in the same spot near the back of the trunk on the driver’s side. Sadly, there’s a pathway that connects from my porch to my driveway. Do the owners pick up after their pets? No, They’re fucking too high to do anything about it! Dog shit is the first thing I see every morning! I have video footage that it’s their dogs. In my city, there’s a $5000 fine for people not picking up after their dogs and I have months of worth of footage of them letting their dogs shit at my place. I was so tempted to send those videos and have them pay $15k.
One thing I was scared about was that, there was this one particular brown dog that bites. He’s been known to lunge at me when I get out of my car and his owner doesn’t put him on a leash. In addition to avoiding dog shit, I have to be mindful when I get out or in my car becuase the stupid dog will bite me and his owner is irresponsible. There was this one time the dog was literally a few inches from me (his teeth grazed me) just as I was getting out of my car.
That same brown dog ended up biting the mailman and it was immediately put down.
Check your city's 311 service request website/app and file a complaint on there. I hate irresponsible dog owners.
Here's an example of mine:
I feel your pain. I live in an area where people are very irresponsible with their dogs. I walk my dog with a Brellavi anti barking device. It emits a sound that only dogs can hear. I've used it when an aggressive dog approached me while I was walking mine, it scared the aggressive dog away. I never walk my dog without it.
If you can get your hands on a taser, I would recommend it. Not even to use on the dog, but if you just press the button the loud zap/crackle will typically startle the dog enough that it won’t come near you.
Would possibly also startle the scrote.
Just make sure your own dog gets used to the sound so he doesn’t bolt away from you.
