I personally love metal (especially black), but I got to admit some pop songs from the early 2010s go very hard so for me it's very unbalanced lmao. How about you guys?
Fellow metal head here! I like music that punches me in the chest and brings out the emotions I suppress, and nothing does that as reliably as metal. I listen to all of it. Ayreon to Rob Zombie, but I have a special place in my heart for Nightwish. In my defense, I used to play guitar and sing in a metal band in college, it was my rebellion against the opera my family pushed me into.
I grew up on classic rock, bluegrass, and old country, not the poppy style stuff that's produced these days but stuff like Reba, Garth, and Straight. Of course, I was a teenager when the 2000s hit and some of those iconic pop songs are real bangers (I totally jam on Nsync and Backstreet Boys with no shame while I'm cleaning, I know that's technically 90s but we run about 10 years behind in this super rural area), so agree with you there.
I also really like to listen to movie scores when I need to focus, stuff like Two Steps from Hell and video game themes too. They're designed to make you focus. Favorites of mine for when I need to get shit done is either the ME3 themes or skyrim themes.
And then I do suppose I have a soft spot for opera and classical. It's way more fun to bust out the metal growl and scare the shit out of people than to go opera on them though.
The cheesiness is absolutely part of the charm. It's just utter shred madness and fun as hell to play, which is why I love it. Great for workouts too! I take my friends along to metal concerts, we're all absolutely unapproachable and all but the worst of the scrotes tend to give us a wide berth.
The tin can effect you mention is hit or miss for me. Sometimes it sounds great, sometimes it's really irritating it just depends. I know all that you mentioned, love Ensiferum - In My Sword I Trust because well, the lyrics.
