Metal is my favourite music genre, so I wanted to make this post. That's all.
FAVOURITE METAL SUBGENRES
Doom, and many of its variants, with the
exception of stoner. Stoner is, mostly, some uninspired Sabbath rehash but with a fuzzier production. I like Electric Wizard, Sleep, Bongzilla and Kyuss, though.
Crossover Thrash (S.O.D, D.R.I, Carnivore, Municipal Waste, The Exploited, Suicidal Tendencies).
Technical death metal. It's my favourite death metal subgenre: really entertaining to listen to, and with some impressive musical skill.
Power metal, specially Japanese and European power metal. I'm not much of a fan of American power, though.
Brutal death it's another of my favourite death metal subgenres, specially when it has slammy influences (as in breakdowns, downtempos, etc.)
Classic Death metal (Entombed, Deicide, Morbid Angel, Repulsion, Death, Possessed).
Sludge metal (I love Eyehategod, Bongripper and Acid Bath).
First wave black metal as Venom, Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer, Sabbat, Midnight, Hellripper. I'm putting this aside from black metal because it's different. Most people don't think about Venom when they think about black metal, generally.
Old school metalcore (Archangel, Integrity, Kickback, Gehenna). Honestly, I like it because it has more hardcore influences than modern metalcore.
Speed Metal (X-Japan, Helloween, Whiplash, Manowar, Saxon, Dio, Iron Maiden, Anthem, Onmyo-Za, Mary's Blood).
Classic metal (Black Sabbath, Priest, Deep Purple, Pagan Altar, etc.).
War metal (Teitanblood, Black Witchery, Concrete Winds, Revenge, Blasphemy, Tetragrammacide)
Black metal, though not second-wave black, unless it has progressive influences (I can't stand Kvist, Darkthrone, Sargeist, Horna, etc. I want my black metal to be dynamic), neither symphonic BM, nor Pagan BM, nor blackgaze.
I also dislike DBSM, with the exception of the fifth Shining album and, if counts, Gris.
In fact, my favourite kind of black metal is Avant-Garde and progressive black metal, like Ved Buens Ende, DoS, Urfaust, Akhlys, Peste Noire, Solefald, Sigh, BAN, etc.
Drone and Drone metal (Sunn O))), Khanate, Boris, Nadja, etc.).
METAL ADJANCENT GENRES I LIKE:
Crust punk (G.I.S.M, Anti Cimex, Inepsy, Amebix).
Powerviolence (Sex Prisoner, Nails, Dropdead, Full of Hell)
Hard rock like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Blüe Öyster Cult, Sir Lord Baltimore, Motörhead (I don't consider them metal, personally), Gun's and Roses).
Grindcore (Wormrot, Insect Warfare, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Electrohippies).
What are yours?
I like In This Moment, but I don't know if she's technically metal.
Poppy does some good metal when Titanic (the Titanic dbag) isn't micromanaging how she brushes her hair or whatever producers do now.
I listen to a lot of different metal subgenres, but mostly black metal. Classics like Darkthrone, Bathory, Mayhem, Burzum, Beherit, Venom (not bm but close) and Windir make up most of my playlist. And by the way I'm a "separate art from the artist"-type person. The rest is old school metal such as Judas, Sabbath, Wasp, Anthrax, Slayer, and a couple Jimi Hendrix songs and other miscellaneous stuff. I instantly love anything atmospheric, especially when there's soft synths in an otherwise harsh sounding bm song
