"Harmful stereotypes about women being bad with money are fiction, not fact. Learn where this idea came from and why it’s time to change the narrative.
The stereotype that women are bad with money exists in many subtle and not-so-subtle forms in western societies. But according to the data, this idea is fiction, not fact. And fortunately, things are changing: An increasing number of women are investing, enjoying more wealth, and becoming more financially confident. It’s time to put the negative stereotypes in the past — where they belong.
To understand where the stereotype comes from, we first need to look at the history of women and work. During the 19th century, most women in middle- and upper-class households in the west weren’t employed, though many working-class women had no choice but to earn a meager living in the factories. However, during World War I and World War II, millions of women entered the workforce to fill the roles left by men sent to war — although their wages were significantly lower.
At the end of World War II, women had proven that they’re capable of occupying more positions than ever before. But in much of the world, the idea that the woman’s role was in the home persisted, largely keeping money in the hands of men. Progress was being made — but slowly. When the EU was formed, equal pay for both men and women was one of its founding principles. Yet as recently as the ‘60s and ‘70s, many women still had to get a signature from their husband or father before they could secure a bank loan."
I'm not surprised. Just look throughout history and you can see how badly men handled money.
This myth came from the same place the "women are bad drivers" myth came from...out their asses. Women pay less in car insurance because they are better drivers. In regards to money and math, here are some facts... 62% of accountants in the US are female...during the 2008 financial crisis, female-run banks fared better across the board...banks with more women on their boards are less likely to commit fraud. Face it, we're better at math/money than they are and we're better drivers too. Stay mad, scrotes!
I think that the whole "woman are bad with money" stereotype was invented purely to encourage women to hand over control of their finances to their husbands.
Women are better with money than men. I love to find deals online, go to cheaper shops, plan ahead to get the lower tier ticket prices to events etc., meanwhile, the men I’ve met will throw 1000s away on meaningless drivel.
I give to charities like kiva that offer micro loans to people for their small local businesses. Charities like Kiva have well documented evidence that WOMEN are safer and more reliable loan and finance managers. More likely to invest the money where they say it will be invested, as well as significantly more likely to return the loan So much so that I give my money exclusively to the women on Kiva.
You can choose which people you give your money to. There's a profile about what they need the money for, where they live, how much they need. Do check it out.
Thank you for sharing the article.
I can imagine that this myth goes hand in hand with the general devaluation of the ‘feminine’ so logically anything that a woman buys is automatically money spent unwisely and impulsively.
But then isn’t it a thing to say someone or something needs “a woman’s touch”? Men complain about women buying useless decoration, expensive clothing and embarrassing cosmetics but at the same time live, look and feel better once a lady is at their side so much so that people around him notice.
It's projection. Men often spend money on the most useless shit. Don't get me started how men will spend thousands of dollars on nikes, a stupid sports car or something
