Covid (in my location) was 2020-2021 mainly… maybe early 2022 we can add if we want to be generous with the timeline but It’s 2024 and some therapists are still only doing telehealth. I understand that’s their choice but gosh it sucks because the options are so few now!
I understand working from home is ideal… I need that safe place to go to where nobody can hear me talk. It’s such a bummer that so many therapists are online only. People need that safe place to get out of the house and get vulnerable. No distractions, no interruptions.
I have health insurance thank goodness but when I went on their behavioral health provider directory, I chose “in person” therapists to filter it…. I kid you not the list went from 532 to only 23.
Then out of those 23, they either aren’t accepting new patients, too far away, or don’t specialize in the specific issue I really need help with.
Has anyone else experienced this? Where you live, are the majority still doing telehealth appointments only?
Im very curious.
When I needed a therapist, I reached to—and I kid you not—96 on the list of my insurance. Of those 96, three called me back. One was not accepting new patients, one was no longer taking my insurance, and the last one I did not like. Everyone else just ghosted me.
I gave up trying to use insurance and decided to pay out of pocket. The one I found was generous enough to provide a siding scale for services. She provides the option for online or in-person meetings.
I would suggest branching out away from your insurance network, at least just to see what’s available. You may find a good fit with a sliding scale who does in-person meetings, and they pay be more affordable out-of-pocket than you think.
