So just airing thoughts, want somewhere to put them.
When I first saw the images for the live action Little Mermaid, trash story aside, I was thrilled to see the star. I'm a white woman from outside the US so I have no idea who she is, young woman looks perfect though.
Now I have seen sooooooo much more of people reacting to racism than the racism itself, however what I have seen is from men and here is my problem: I feel like the men making an issue are upset because of their peens, because of their fantasy of objectifying a fictional character and the live action is not doing justice to their sick fantasy, we all know the story.
Or maybe I just assume all men are mentally unwell until they prove otherwise. I just don't see why the hate.
I'm not white, and I find it so condescending when big media companies mostly headed by white men throw us these "bones".
It's like "here, one of you non-whites can star in a remake that's guaranteed to pale in comparison to the original, which was based on a story written by a white man. You're welcome! Oh, and you all make sure you support it to 'own' the people who don't like it. They're all racists, okay? Nevermind that we're stirring the pot on purpose because we needed to manufacture a reason for people to care about our tiresome rehash material! Give us your money!"
If they don't start weeping watching little black girl reactions to the trailer they have no soul: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMtuXBwkHx4
To be honest I've seen just as much criticism from women. It's pure racism and it's a disgrace.
personally as a dark skinned black woman i don’t see myself being represented by her but it’s crazy how racist people are. that’s just the society we live in unfortunately
Idc about what color she is. It’s just not true to the original and it doesn’t remind me much of the original and it feels very pandering. No matter what race no one should be changing it for a statement. It’s very dumb no matter what movie, medium, or race. The actress never deserved any of the hate she got and I do feel bad for her. Honestly, a better way to diversify is to make more movies about other races and cultures to represent everyone with a great story.
Personally I wasn't fond of casting a black actress to do a white princess for the simple reason that white Ariel with a red hair is the ORIGINAL image that we grew up with. They could have created a NEW black princess with new story, instead they changed an already existing one! I'm sure no one would like it either if they turned the black panther character into a white one. Stick to the original image ffs.
