I was wondering how some of you ladies dress. As I've been learning more about how I've been doing most things in my life to impress others and men, I am starting to revamp my entire wardrobe. I notice that many women wear form fitting outfits, especially now that summer is coming around. Personally I have never felt comfortable wearing really tight clothes. Emotionally it makes me feel exposed when my clothes are sticking to my body, and physically I just like there to be space between fabric and my skin.
Even jeans feel physically uncomfortable for me to wear. I don't want to wear them anymore! I started wearing leggings more and I don't enjoy the feeling in them either. I mean, do you ladies actually enjoy wearing jeans or leggings? I see men wearing baggy pants all the time and they look extremely comfortable. Not like gross baggy, just cozy and stylish looking sweatpants or activewear pants. So I've been thinking.. do women truly enjoy wearing form fitting clothes? Or if we look deeper within, do we do it to get attention and validation? And to please the males?
I imagine women dress this way because they enjoy their bodies and want people to look at their bodies so others can enjoy them too. But why do our bodies need to be enjoyed by others?
How would you describe your style?
Comfortable, elegant, feminine - I wear dresses 95% of the time.
I have comfortable dresses, sexy dresses, modest dresses, work appropriate dresses, loungewear dresses, and more.
After the past three years I realized that pants and jeans were so uncomfortable for me (and made my body appear more masculine and restricted than I liked) so dresses are the way to go. I always feel put together and comfortable when I'm wearing a dress and can make it work appropriate with a cardigan or a blazer or casual depending on the shoe/accessories. Plus I don't see many women wearing dresses to be comfortable (mostly lounge wear) so I tend to get compliments (sometimes nice but overall idc because I'm comfortable).
If it's something like a business formal event or a gym workout then I would probably not wear a dress but for every other situation it's my go-to.
I also wear cotton undergarments to increase the comfort factor and everything feels more breathable.
I'm a metal chick, with a splash of renaissance, goth, and prep depending on my mood. My nephew calls my style southern rocker vampire. I like stuff that gives off a warrior vibe. Lots of thick metal bangles, large or stacked rings, oversize belts, leather. I like all colors besides yellows and oranges, but I have a lot of black because it hides grease and black horse hair and it's very slimming and can be classy or not. I never wear high heeled anything, never carry a purse.
I sew and tailor a lot of my own clothes because nothing mass produced ever fits me right, and nothing ever hides my sidearm as well as I'd like. My FAVORITE pieces are my coats. I like them victorian inspired, full length, with full skirts flowing dramatically like Vader's cape, lined with fun colorful brocades, some of them have embroidered accents or quilted sections, and deep hoods. Right now I have 7 of them, all different colors. I make a new one every fall. Beneath them for general public appearances I wear black or jean leggings, knee high boots, and whatever coordinating tee/sweater is appropriate for the temps. I keep the rest of my wardrobe fairly simple and I look for good quality fabrics that won't pill in the wash or stretch out.
In summer, it's capris with tennis shoes or jeans with paddock boots, and a tee or a tank top. I only wear shorts and sandals at the water. Dresses are reserved for dates where I think there's a future and feel comfortable showing my feminine side, weddings, and funerals.
I keep my hair in a braid or in milkmaid braids on my head. When I wear it down I either let it do it's natural hippie wave or I do rag curls. Makeup always minimal (I am very pale blonde and I look like I have no lashes without mascara).
100% agree with the other comment, dresses and skirts are incredibly comfortable (and a dress is even lower effort since you don’t need to mix and match), they look great with cardigans and blazers and I usually throw a pair of cozy stockings on during the winter (may not be doable if you live in a very cold area, but otherwise that will do). As for pants, I share your dislike for jeans but I own a pair of bootcut pants made in a softer fabric that are incredibly comfortable and look very dressed up.
I get compliments on my sense of style but I don't know how I would label it. I swear by quality clothing and undergarments. I buy new, well-made undergarments, socks, shoes and purses. I wear 100% wool socks year-round, just thinner ones in summer. I live in a big city and most of my clothes come from thrift stores. Many here are simply filled with high-end items. I look for lightly/barely used good brands in 100% cotton, linen, wool, & cashmere.
I wear leggings that I purchase from Amazon. I tend to not buy grey or black but more so in solid matte colors. I like color. So if I wear leggings that are green I may pair that with a turquoise top (kinda in the same color family) or take those same green leggings and pair it with a yellow & white top. I frequently wear white trainers bc they are practical for city living and go with everything.
Variations on the theme of black, haha. I might add the odd splash of colour occasionally - jewel tones work really well for me because I have fair cool-toned skin and black hair/hazel eyes (I find teal and purple in particular really make my eyes pop!) but generally speaking I'm all about the monochrome. Accessory-wise, I'm a total magpie and have a real penchant for unusual silver jewellery (bonus if it features moons and stars and/or is historical in some way, like my custom made Viking-style bracelet) although I don't wear rings on my fingers. I'm also covered in black tattoos which are based on designs from Iron Age Celtic art, and have multiple rings in my ears along with a pair of star-shaped microdermals on my upper cheeks, just beneath the corner of each eye. I don't wear any makeup except mascara - thanks for the awesome skin genetics, mum! - and have had my eyebrows microbladed. My hair is worn one way and one way only: long and loose. Love when it flies in the wind for extra 'warrior queen' vibes. Brushing it afterwards isn't so great, though.
I dress conservatively & understated most of the time. Maybe a dash of sporty in there.
I see it as a form of expression and also communication. I don’t like to look too approachable unless I’m in the mood to socialize. I noticed when I’m dressed casually in feminine colors, or cardigans, soft sweaters, with subtle makeup people assume I’m available for small talk, to help them with something, or to do emotional labor of some sort. When I’m dressed smart, in dark colors or colorblock patterns, sharp contrasting colors, people perceive me as serious, or cold, and they less often make small talk, or request emotional labor.
Most days, I’m mentally tired and just don’t want to deal with people. If I really want to feel invisible, I’ll wear baggy clothes and no makeup, glasses, messy hair.
I’ve found that dressing with my skin tone in mind (ie cool/warm tones) helps my outfit pop and makes me more confident overall. Certain colors are just not complimentary and make my face look sallow.
Like you, I've realised that jeans aren't really comfortable for me, and they are increasingly difficult to style.
I wear dresses most of the time, sometimes I'll wear linen pants. I'm trying to get into formal trousers in quality fabric, loose fit, as a dressy and casual look.
I'd recommend looking at what dresses suit you body type. I don't wear tight dresses. I swear by adding a belt on the days I feel like it - the dress can be oversized but a belted waist ties it together. Then I can wear the same dresses for work, weekends, dates - changing the accessories switches up the look.
I'll keep this short. I only wear black and I don't own bras or jeans anymore. I find them uncomfortable and restricting. I'll wear leggings or when it's warmer dresses. All of my pieces are high quality, well made.
My style most of the time is comfy, casual, and cute. I’ve had people comment that they like my style, but I’m not too sure what it is because I feel like I’m always aiming for comfortability for the most part 😅. When I’m out and about it’s most of the time a top with long pants and a cardigan. Most of the things I own are neutral colors like black, white, nude, grey, and brown. I stopped wearing jeans and leggings. The only time I wear leggings is if they are workout leggings. If I’m feeling extra cute and going some place, I would wear a dress (with a cardigan if cold). Sometimes I wear dresses just because it’s easy to throw on and doesn’t take much effort. The dress style ranges from spring/summer casual to date night. I also wear comfy slippers with my outfits generally.
I totally get you though. I’m currently in school so I’m saving money and a new wardrobe revamp is the last thing on my list. I can’t wait until I am able to revamp everything and add more pieces to my closet such as trouser pants, blazers, and chic blouses :). If you aren’t sure but want to get ideas of what you’d like, Pinterest is a good place to look into!
ugh, i am a bike commuter and very active, so form-fitting clothes ARE practical for me. some leggings feel great, especially if they are super soft and buttery. honestly, i wear a lot of tech fabrics because it seems like i'm always sweating. my shorts and leggings MUST have pockets, and i like zip-up jackets with venting and mock neck collars to protect my decolletage from getting sunburned. i also wear sports bras (prefer cotton blends) and go commando.
on my rest days i love zip up or pullover hoodies and ADORE wide-leg flowy pants with fold-over waists. i have a handmade hoodie top with an extra large hood and i would wear it every day if i could. i do have a pair of jeggings which are pretty comfy.
makeup is pretty minimal: tinted SPF and i use liquid liner for a cat eye 95% of the days i am out (i reclaim it from the patriarchy as my war paint). the outer half of my eyebrows are sparse, so sometimes i use pencil. and sometimes mascara (waterproof, because i’m always sweating).
i have a half-shave i keep close-cut. the rest of my hair is long.
I wear baggy clothes all the time, I like modest clothes and the style looks good on me. I pretty much exclusively wear baggy pants because like you I hate tight jeans and leggings. I feel like the key to not looking messy is wearing colors that suit you and work together because then the baggy look looks intentional. And baggy doesnt mean messy, young women dress in this style a lot nowadays and many look so elegant.
I think your comment about whether women enjoy what they wear is very important. I am a confident person, wearing modest clothes is not because I am ashamed of my body, its because I know its bad for mental health if I see people treat me differently based on my body, regardless of whether it is positively or negatively. I dress more freely around people that I care about and that care about me.
So you can dress stylish and comfortable and do it for the right reasons for sure. If you want more clear guidance for how to dress, what helped me was finding my color season and using the Kibbe System to find out what styles fits my body type (if you struggle with body image, i would stay away from the second one because one can get sucked into overanalyzing your body).
I am glad you are questioning this!
When we criticize women for how they look and how they dress, we always lose.
I wear form-fitting clothes. Or at least form fitting tops. For me personally, I love the look and feel of a tight top and a loose bottom — maybe a flowy skirt or baggy pants. Not to sound shallow, but over the pandemic, I just noticed that I really love my body and the way I'm shaped. I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing something that shows a womanly figure, and I do feel comfortable and confident in a form-flattering shirt. I don't do it for attention. Cleavage is where I draw my line, though. I feel way too self-conscious in anything low-cut, but even if I do, my A cups aren't really busting out anywhere 😅
As much as I love my upper half, society has taught us all that flat butts like mine are not in style right now, so sadly, I do feel self-conscious when I wear leggings. And men will still gawk at my pancake cheeks! That's probably why I stick to the loose bottoms!
For hot weather, I like breezy sundresses or lightweight wide-leg pants the best—they allow airflow to your skin, and don’t make you feel exposed.
Very feminine, dresses almost always. One time I wore jeans to work and I had a coworker come up to me from behind to check if it was really me because it’s that unusual for me not to wear a dress lol. I wear makeup every day, nothing too crazy, it’s my face but a lot better. I need the makeup because I’m low contrast naturally. I usually sport a blowout look for freshly washed hair. Then I go for flat iron curls because they hold super well on the second day.
Overall I look up to princess Catherine for inspiration.
My style is very elegant light, and airy. I enjoy light fabrics like silk or lace, and wear lots of dresses/shauls/flowy blouses/Ect. I’m also a yogi, so I wear lots of lululemon as well. The majority of my clothes are light colors like pink, white, lilac, Ect.
I love hair bows! Not Jojo siwa-esque obviously, but elegant cute bows to tie up my pony tail. I also love floral accessories and prints. For shoes, when I’m not hiking or running I love to wear sandals.
Just revamping my wardrobe after my second baby. I like form fitting stuff because I’m an active person - clothes flapping around is not practical for me. Dresses are lovely but not my preference most days. I have a couple for cocktail events and two sundresses I rarely wear.
What I love the most though is a good pantsuit. Tailored clothing looks great on women. These days my go-to outfits are black crepe trousers with a white sneaker or loafers. I’ll wear a smart t-shirt, a silk blouse, or tank top to go with this.
As a gym lover I adore active wear but I try to confine this to the gym only or maybe if I’m at the playground with my little ones.
Fabric quality is important too because I have sensitive skin. Anything in cotton, linen, cashmere or bamboo works for me. I keep my jewellery and accessories minimal but try to have my hair up or styled simply. I’ll also wear a tinted moisturiser with concealer and lip colour to look put together.
So I’m also still figuring out my style. Mine used to be very basic feminine but lately I’ve been trying out just not caring so much about style, but putting my comfort first. I wfm and never have to be on camera so my situation may be a bit different than yours. Most of the time when I’m working I’m just wearing tshirts/sweatshirts and sweatpants or pajama pants. If I’m going out during the week it depends what I’m doing - I just dress practically for that - leggings/tshirts for most of them bc I’m either doing something very active or I’m playing my instrument which is somewhat physically demanding so I want to be comfortable. On weekends if I’m hanging out with friends it depends on what I’m doing what the past few times I’ve been wearing jeans, sweatshirts and sneakers. I used to squeeze into jeans when I was in high school just to fit into a size 3/5 but now as a full grown woman idgaf so I get size 10/12 so they’re way more comfortable than they used to be. Something I’m completely done with for my comfort actually is bras - I’m a bralette girl now. I highly recommend them.
Adding- this weekend I wore a costume for an event. Corset, petticoat, pantiloons. That stuff is absolutely designed to slow you down and make shallow breathing so you’re lightheaded and struggle to concentrate on much more than your restricted body.
To keep it simple I’m a Pinkpilled feminist aka Terf. I believe in equity and the right to decide over your own life and how you want to live. Biological males are not women so I don’t want them in a female only society. I’m leaning towards WGTOW lifestyle.
I read Quotes of Susan B Anthony and women who rebelled against male oppression.
Im an old soul I like how women behaved and dressed in the 1940 at least on tv shows uploaded on YouTube and I like ppl who have a finishing school background. I’m into activities that doesn’t require internet such as Chess.
