Looking for advice. I hope this is allowed, and of course, please delete if not. I need the help, though and feel ridiculous. I had an embarrassing day but looking to quickly see it as humorous and vowing not to repeat it. I need new clothes :( (for anyone wondering: I did try asking my friends, but it's never come up before for me to notice that none of them have any idea what this issue is like. My mother didn't work and does her best, which is cute but not helpful.) Two plus years home working remotely, and the natural aging that took place in that time, I have slimmed a bit more than I realized. Working in tech, it matters that clothes fit and sort of look like you bought them for yourself (I buy all my clothes new due to the ick of used clothes - another topic), but as we know clothes are not made for women's bodies or to fit us well. Jeans, shorts, etc, in casual settings I care little if they're not quite long enough or a little too loose on my waist so I can get them up around and past my hips. It doesn't look great, but I can get them on and they stay on and that's the most I tend to hope for out of clothes. For reference, I get the 32 Levis, but after a wash or two they shrink enough that they don't hit my ankles any longer - no biggie. Who cares? 25.5 waist, 26 works with a belt, and 35.5 hips. Inseam measures 31"but I get the 32 and they shrink quickly until they are too short and look silly.
Where do we taller slim women find career pants and clothes that actually fit? I'm told we're required to show face in the office a few times/month, which is annoying for enough other reasons, and I was horrified to realize that even my way-too-small-to-ever-fit pants are too baggy for a belt to fix (the belt stays on the skin w/ the belt loops dragging down the pants that refuse to be held up). These are size 2s and some I have that are more ill-fitting say 0. Also, another topic. I had to embarrassingly add a long shirt to help manage and cover up, which is more an illusion and not entirely successful. I'd feel more comfortable and confident knowing things were staying put. Rather than trying every store and getting super stressed trying on multiple iterations of clothes way too big I thought I'd ask knowledgeable queens. Where can I find pants for longer inseams and waists that have wider hips to navigate? Would prefer to support a woman-owned business due to the issue at hand, but since this is semi-urgent, not required for recommendations.
Help please and many thanks!
I immediately thought, Asos and Topshop have a whole section for tall people, but I'm trying not to encourage fast fashion. I looked it up and found this store called Taylor Tall. It's a sustainable clothing brand that is proportioned for women 5'9 and taller. This is what sold me on it: "Taylor Tall doesn’t just increase the inseam lengths but considers and modifies each measurement, designing their garments with lower bust, hip, hemlines, waists, pockets, and knee positions, longer sleeves, and wider. Additionally, Taylor Tall offers the option to customize your inseam length so that you can extend the length of your garments without having to go up a size and sacrifice fit elsewhere." Otherwise I always recommend finding a good tailor for perfect fit and getting a size larger. This has worked well for me with I'll fitting clothes with the nice fabric and style I like.
I would go to a suit store that tailors skirts and pants to fit you. Tailored clothing look and fit the best on anyone. They are not online or in malls, they are usually boutiques or small business stores.
Jeans are notoriously difficult to fit! I have similar problems with that dreaded gap in the waist. Combined with too many tops being made too short... I'm not even tall. I just have a long torso.
For the problem of not being the right inseam length, tucking the legs into boots works great.
You might want to look into high-waisted trousers. I refuse to buy anything low-rise or mid-rise now. Try some materials other than denim. Things like wool and twill tend to be less stiff, which makes them better at hugging curves. Look for trousers that have more room around the hips. Too many pants are designed to fit tight around the hips - those are the worst - avoid avoid avoid.
Skirts and dresses are much easier to fit. Even if your workplace is more casual and you don't want to look too formal, skirts and dresses do come in casual styles and fabrics, too, so you don't necessarily have to rule them out.
Jjill.com has tall sizing. Eileen Fisher has casual professional looking clothes.
I'm petite and had a similar problem.
I used to be in tech and dressed with a simple, buttonless cardigan and either pants or a plain knit skirt and some sort of top.
Skirts might be a better choice than pants as they are easier to fit.
I'm 6'1 and a size 2, I know your struggle. Here's what I've found:
Simple basics - the gap. They have a fantastic tall section that includes work and casual clothing. Everything is on sale right now, go check it out. They own Old Navy and Banana Republic too, which also have tall
Dressier work clothes - Banana Republic. They're more expensive than the Gap, so it really depends on your budget and lifestyle. They often have 40% off sales, so wait
Outerwear and staple work pieces - J Crew. Expensive and not always the best fit for really slim ladies, they do have some great pieces. I like the cut of their dress shirts.
Trendy skinny jeans - Abercrombie (they have long that isn't long enough for me, but prob for you) or AE.
Random stuff - Asos
Girl! I got you! I’m 5’10 and slim but curvy, I looooove fashion nova jeans. They’re made for girls with big hips and smaller waists (I see you have a pretty low waist to hip ratio) and with skinnies I have no problem with the length. I love the flex game strong jeans, they’re ultra high waisted so they stay put, and I Don’t have to worry about my crack hanging out, ( I have a high crack Lolololololol) The dark wash also looks so nice and put together. Dark wash and black jeans always look more professional to me.
I work at a biomed tech company and we probably have a similar dress code.
I have another suggestion if you like dresses. I love wearing dresses to work because they’re much more comfortable to sit in all day than jeans. I loooooove wearing plain almost knee length dresses. like the knit dresses that are fitted. I love those with a longline cardigan. Dress it up with some accessories, maybe a belt. The cardigan makes it look appropriate for work, but then I can take off the cardigan and not feel frumpy after work. I get these plain dresses from Shein. They’re like $10 each. They also have a tall section. but like I said, I’m 5’10 and the regular fit dresses do me right.
Also, if you like the fit in the hips but not the waist, there are waist cinchers that you can buy, but you can’t cinch too much or the extra fabric down below bubbles and looks weird.
