My therapist is a baby boomer and she told me to get a part-time job on a Saturday for half the day. I already work full-time. I like my therapist, but sometimes she can be out of touch. I told her I'd like to get a car eventually and want to start saving. Unfortunately, I do not make a lot, and I'm also paying off my hospital bill and anesthesia bill on top of everything else. I have told her that I'm struggling to find another job that pays more. I've had a couple of interviews recently, but unfortunately no luck. I don't know if she fully comprehends how hard it is now to get a job, but she tries to help. I had a phone session with her yesterday and I felt frustrated afterwards. I don't know if she understands that until I finally get a higher paying job, I can't really do the things I want. She even suggested a few times going to Florida where my dad is to get a job, but you need a car to get around. I still need more practice driving, and also I have no plans to ever move there.
Also, what job will pay someone once a week for half a day????
Update: I have worked a weekend job in addition to my full time job 3 years ago for a few weeks. I hated it and I was completely burnt out. It was for my old job because they needed help while they were looking for someone.
i feel like the Boomer solution to every problem is "get a job."
You're paying her. The bond between a patient and therapist is meant to be one that is both well boundaried and exemplar of a healthy relationship because it's a space in which you should feel comfortable sharing and being heard. She shouldn't be telling you what to do... unless this is CBT or something? I'm guessing this is psychotherapy. Leave. Find someone else. You sound quite vulnerable.
I have a friend who works part time for a stadium and indeed gets paid for one day of work. She is basically an usher. On game days, she is there to tell people where to sit. Other days she is there to man the elevator. It's not a lot of pay, but gets to do something every weekend and at this point, I think she does it for the lols. Apparently they have high overturn and are always hiring. Still need a way to get to the local venue, tho.
If you have good credit (600-700) you could apply for 0% Apr credit cards and do balance transfers.
Always pay a bit above the minimum to actually pay them off, the minimum is misleading (on purpose). But this'll give you more time to pay off the debt while you save up for the car faster because they won't charge you any money while the debt sits around in there during the 0% period.
Also I'd recommend looking at used car places and heading to smaller mechanics to get the work done but honestly car repairs can be looked up online because it's just normal knowledge. Big messy stuff like alignment and oil changes are worth paying for.
Newer cars are crazy expensive for no reason and they lose value like immediately which is why older cars are worth it plus they use cheaper materials nowadays.
Me and my dad love old Hondas personally because they're durable. Buying a car before 2004 can be tricky because those also sucked back then and had a lot of transmission problems.
Source: my dad works on cars and we both have debt buuut the ol credit card trick will buy you some time. Just watch out for the APR after the period ends because sometimes it's crazy but normally you'll have enough time to pay it off because they almost always do 12+ months.
Getting a second job isn't worth it, not because it's impossible but it'll impede the quality of your highest paying job. Jobs are more demanding than ever. What you could also do is look at unnecessary expenses or money draining habits.
