Hi Queens, I'm about to begin a sales role in my company. Thing is, I've never worked on sales, and I have a science/technical background. I'm excited about this new role, but I'm looking for some resources that can give me a walking, if not running start at my new position!
Any books/podcasts/readings recommended would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers!
Hi, I started my career in sales but have since left. One thing I wish I'd known earlier on is that it takes a lot of time to ramp. People get drawn to sales typically bc of the $$$ but that comes later. You have to work really hard to build your book of business, get comfortable with cold calls, comfortable with rejection, and comfortable working under the pressure of a quota. There are a TON of resources on LinkedIn of other sales professionals, Jon Barrows comes to mind. But it is also industry specific, so the strategies for example real estate sales may not apply to selling a simple payroll or software. Ultimately to be successful at sales you have to commit to the grind. If you do that, the commissions will come rolling in, and you'll start to get referrals from last clients. Good luck! Also be warned that 90% of men who meet you in person and want to set up a "lunch meeting" are full of shit and don't intend to buy your product.
Fellow scientist-turned-public-facing-role here! I don’t think I really used any resources to adapt beyond some YouTube videos at first. The most effective thing for me was exposure, so I asked a bunch of my colleagues if I could sit in on meetings, shared my ideas with them, and get their feedback. Once I had some basic workable knowledge I realized I’d never be able to out-finance the true business people. My strength is in evaluating new tech and history, so I did some market analyses and read some “History Of My Field” books. Your mileage may vary, but it gave me a unique niche that my team has found valuable.
Congratulations on your new role, T.Porp!🥳🎊🥂 Following this for suggestions to level up my skills. I have never had a sales role in my life unless you count retail where you are really there to pick up clothing from the floor.
