I'm paraphrasing something I read in a book: China is a tiger that has its front legs in the 21st century and its hind legs in the 19th century.
Contemporary Chinese culture, as we all know, is rooted in thousands of years of violent misogyny. Starting with my parents' generation (born in 1940s and after), many educated women have started to become "dominant" in their marriages by barking orders at their husbands and being the "boss" in their marriages. They are loud, vocal, argumentative, and not afraid to show their anger. Most educated Chinese husbands I've seen have taken to this arrangement amicably enough, at least on the surface.
However, many uneducated Chinese men resent the power women have gained in Chinese society. Perhaps these men are the Chinese equivalent of MGTOW redpillers. These are the men the Chinese women in the article are trying to escape.
For reference: my parents are culturally Chinese, and so are all their friends.
" China is a tiger that has its front legs in the 21st century and its hind legs in the 19th century." Damn, that's a good one. That describes how I conceptualize China.
In a society that is already oppressed, it will be the further oppressed within that culture (women) who bear the brunt of the worst treatment. Consider the treatment of Uyghur women in China. They represent less than 2% of the population and as such, receive the worst treatment among all in China. In addition to systemic violence and state-sanctioned cruelty, Uyghur women are rounded up and forced to work in Labor camps. Their heads are shaved and their hair is sold outside of the country at a premium on the foreign market.
It makes perfect sense for women en masse to just nope out of China completely.
