Oscar Pistorius, the disgraced South African Paralympian who murdered his girlfriend on Valentine's Day 10 years ago, was granted parole at a hearing on Friday and will be released.
A double amputee sprinter known as the "Blade Runner" for his prosthetic legs, Pistorius, 37, was convicted of fatally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp four times through a locked bathroom door at his home in Pretoria in 2013.
Pistorius was told at a hearing in Pretoria, the administrative capital where he has been held, that he will be released on Jan. 5, 2024.
A model and law graduate, Steenkamp was 29. Tania Koen, a lawyer who has represented the Steenkamps throughout the parole process and Pistorius' appeals, confirmed to NBC News that parole was granted.
South Africa's Correctional Services department said in a statement that the parole board had made its decision after assessing Pistorius' profile and deciding that he had a "positive support system." He may be subject to rehabilitation programs aimed at reintegrating him with society, the statement said.
Wtf....her poor family.
But women who kill a man for raping them or harmed their children will be behind bars longer than that, a human trafficking victim went to jail without parole for killing her pimp and lover boy. But these so called good mis understood men need parole.
Eleven years is not an adequate sentence for killing someone. End of. I don't live in South Africa but unfortunately where I live isn't any better in terms of the sentences people serve for violent crime.
He'll get out next year, after having served only 8 years. It's unbelievable.
They'll get it when women realize it's only ten years to murder our abusive husbands.
Murder will be a crime again.
Sidenote: this is why I have no sympathy for White "South Africans."
They tried to colonize, and failed miserably, now they sit around and beat their families up. Get the women and children out only.
This might ruffle feathers, but I'm going to say it.
Don't date crippled men. 99.99999% of them have an axe to grind, and this is not even considering the physical burden they place on their significant others.
Olympian or not, I don't fuck with crippled men.
Let's have a few details on this:
He claims he woke up at night, heard noises in the bathroom, thought it was an intruder and then didn't call the police or check on his live-in-girlfriend who should have been sleeping next to him, but proceeded to fire four shots through the locked bathroom door without warning, then broke down the door with a baseball bat and found his dead girlfriend. Totally reasonable story, right?
That's what you do if you hear noises in the bathroom at night and your partner is not in bed next to you. He totally didn't ambush and shoot her on purpose. What a tragic accident /s
You know what I think? They had a fight. She fled and locked herself in the bathroom. He shot her on purpose and when he didn't hear anything after that he broke down the door to see if she was really dead.
Women get very hard sentences if they kill their abusers. Prisons in Canada have many. The Globe and Mail has a podcast, In Her Defense, about one of them. Women are not allowed to defend themselves either.
As for Pistorius, I pieced together the long saga of his trial, sentencing, appeals, and eventual incarceration. He only served 6-7 years. The system coddles these guys and lets them out early.
Edited to add that news reports obscure the short jail time by saying it was 11 years after murdering Reeva Steenkamp.
