I hate to say it, but this is what sets off my alarm bells for choosing female friends. When they talk about their “partner” of 7+ years (in one case 11!) I get the friendship ick. I get that marriage isn’t for everyone but girl, how is this benefiting you? Taking care of a man-baby like an overgrown weed parked in your living room?
I usually tell them that I'll be there when they open their eyes and want to leave, but I can't watch them destroy themselves like that. I say that because the biggest obstacle when someone wants to leave an abusive relationship is isolation. Maybe they'll remember that one person who offered them help if they decide to leave and contact me.

My ex-best high school friend was with hers for 13 years. She called me one day and said in a dreamy voice, "I can't believe we've been together for so long. It's amazing." A little less than a year later they were broken up, and he was married with a kid on the way.
