I'm reading Clannad right now, which is pretty good, but since it's very sad, I'd like to read something else in-between. I've been told that Maikoji (or something like that) is pretty funny, but it has sex scenes, which is something that makes me uncomfortable. I have Higurashi (the first game) on my phone, and Narcissu, which doesn't have any sexual scenes on them. Could someone recommend me another visual novel, beside these with no creepy, sexual stuff?
Thank you
I really love visual novels, because they're a peaceful, story-rich and non-addictive way of gaming. However, OP, your question is a bit broad - are there any genres you prefer, such as horror, romance, fantasy, etc.? And what length?
Some recs in each genre without explicit scenes:
Horror/mystery:
Scarlet Hollow: staggering replay value, small town mystery setup, 4 chapters released thus far.
The Letter: multiple perspectives throughout the game, suspense on who survives until the end. Lots of jump scares, be warned. There is one 'sex scene' in that you, the player can choose if it happens, but it was not explicit anyway. Bonus: make the right decisions, and you can lead a total LVM character to his death.
Sci-fi:
STEINS;GATE: time-travel conspiracy game. Excellent world-building. I tried not to cry. I cried a lot.
Romance/otome:
(Generally speaking, OP, this is most hit or miss visual novel genre, IMO. Sadly, even in a wish-fulfilment genre aimed at women, abusive/rude love interests and meek or outrightly foolish protagonists are plentiful.)
My Vow To My Liege: a bit of a hidden gem for HVM love interests. The first time I've seen a reasonably written older man love interest. Stunning soundtrack. Protagonist is a woman forced to disguise herself as a man to be the king of her nation.
Ebon Lights: free! Elven love interests, several of whom qualify as HVM. Protagonist accidentally stumbles onto a power sought after by the high-ranking members of an elven city-state. Somewhat customisable protagonist personality.
Gilded Shadows: sci-fi + fantasy setting, pretty intense worldbuilding for otome, sexual content can be toggled off. Up to 9 love interests, but not all yet released. Genuinely non-linear stories.
Hatoful Boyfriend: pure comedy, don't ask any questions, just jump in.
Fantasy/historical:
Roadwarden: not quite like the other entries on this list, but still mostly text-based. Like a fantasy adventure without the controls of the typical RPG-like game.
The Pillars of the Earth: three possible protagonists, based on a real novel, amazing historical context which sent me into a rabbit hole of research.
Cinders: totally different from my previous two recommendations. Short game. Fairytale re-telling of Cinderella, with a focus on the main character' s personality and choices. Very, very pretty, IMO.
Have you given the Phoenix Wright games a try yet? They are some of my favorite games of all time. 💖
There are a lot of them and the most recent one on Steam -- The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles -- is a masterpiece. 🥰 You don't need to have played any of the other games to pick up any of them in the series, especially the one I just mentioned because it's based in Victorian London.
I think Hakuoki is pretty good, I don't remember any sexual stuff being in it at all. Nightshade is also good, no sex either.
