Ladies I'm embarrassed to say that the first time I made soup with leek, I chopped the whole thing up, fibrous greens and all. Did you know you're not supposed to use the green part??
How was I to know?!
My mother didn't cook much (or very well, bless her heart), so as a kid we mostly ate Taco Bell, pizza, and pasta with red sauce. And PB&J sandwiches. Maybe an apple here and there.
I've been eating healthily now for a while, but I couldn't tell you why it's taken so much of my adult life to YouTube "how to cut an onion" or "how to dice celery", and why I chose instead to just wing it and struggle through.
DID YOU KNOW HOW SIMPLE AND EASY THESE THINGS COULD BE?!?
The internet can be a terrible place, don't get me wrong, but every so often there are gems like these. Gordon Ramsey showed me how to cut an onion without releasing the eye-burning fumes. Some other guy showed me a quick and easy way to dice tomatoes.
Let the internet show you how you can make your life easier, when you can!
I get you. I'm learning to paint with watercolor and learned so much from YouTube, blogs and e-books. Without internet I'd have to do all trial and errors by myself because there's no watercolor classes here and if I want to buy watercolor books, I'd have to import them physically. The shipping costs and customs duties would kill my wallet.
And without the internet I wouldn't know there are women with standards that refuse to date scrotes out there lol.
I'm gonna blow your mind: veggie chopper! You want the ultimate cooking experience then buy one of these babies and your prep time is severely reduced. Not to mentions cutting onions is tear free. My chopper is one of my favorite gadgets.
Don’t feel bad because the parents ARE SUPPOSED to be teaching it but a lot of parents get away with neglect so this is pretty common sadly. Don’t let pick mes shame you for it because cooking and cleaning are usually their only accomplishments in life
This is why I don't tolerate any form of "I don't know how to do it!" from people, especially when it comes to simple life skills and chores. They all have a phone and the knowledge of the world is literally one web search away.
Don't know how to sew on your own button? Google it. Don't know how to do certain chores properly or how often they need to be done? Google it. Don't know how to cook a healthy meal? Google it.
My parents taught me the basics very well but I still looked up how to do quite a few things when I first moved out from home (often because I was too proud to call and ask them for help). It worked fine.
You can use the green part, love. Maybe for that particular recipe it wasn't being used. and don't worry about it no one knows everything about anything. Life is a journey and internet tutorials can be great for things our parents didn't teach us, or even just for fun. i learnt a cool technique for peeling hard boiled eggs that probably saves me over 20-30 mins when i bulk cook them. I learnt it from and ig reel. lol.
