They are expensive so I don't want to buy them without knowing what it's like.
What do they feel like against the skin? Is it comfortable, even during heavy flow? How many do you need to go through per day? How easy are they to wash and dry?
Thanks in advance.
Expectation: I’ll stop using pads or tampons!
Reality: Reduced use of those things but still use them, just with period underwear. They don’t leak (huge win alone), but unless you buy several pairs it’s unrealistic to never use products again. At least for me it is, and I have 2 pairs. I use the brand Period. and yes I bought both pairs myself. Considering another pair to reduce product use.
I found them comfortable enough and they do soak up the blood, but I did feel like I was sitting in a pool of blood whenever a new "wave" would come out. Obviously it also doesn't soak up the pieces of uterine tissue and they just kind of... sit there. You also have to pre wash them by hand before putting them in the washing machine. All in all, I didn't see much of a benefit compared to tampons and menstrual cups.
I find period underwear more comfortable than pads, but they don't feel great when soaked. I prefer to changed them twice a day if I have a heavy flow because I don't like how they feel when soaked or full of dry menstrual fluid. They're machine washable and machine dry or hang dry. Rinse immediately after use if you want them to get properly cleaned. The heavy flow types don't get washed very clean in the machine unless you rinse well first. They can get discolored and stiff...
Honestly, they're a hassle to get properly clean, but I still use them because I hate them less than pads/tampon/menstrual cup.
If you purchased Thinx within a certain time period, you can opt to get $7/pair for up to 3 pairs if you have proof of purchase from the class action lawsuit ($21 total, so not enough to buy one pair). 😅

EDIT: I mentioned Thinx since @shark_ie mentioned the lawsuit.
An elderly lady had heaps of adult diapers and didn't know what to do with it. So I took some packs and I use those as large sanitary pads. No more leaks at night or fear of leaking through my trousers and I feel at peace because I bleed a lot and I'm saving heaps of money. I find Diva cups uncomfortable so this will do.
There is a post in my history about this very topic! Many good suggestions too
I have some from Uniqlo ones that I use as a backup for my diva cup. They’re okay, but if I wear them on a hot day, they tend to absorb sweat and stay warm and damp all day (they’re nylon; maybe a natural fiber pair would be better?) Also, they tend to retain odor if I don’t wash them right away or treat them with vinegar before putting them in the wash. I wouldn’t buy these again, but maybe some natural fiber ones.
Yes, every cycle. Game changer for me as I'm quite heavy, I wear even during day. Always with a pad for peace of mind. I'd recommend looking into the brand and material - something natural based like cotton or bamboo. I think one of the major brands had a case suit for carcinogenic materials (Thinx brand?).
I just throw in the washing machine as usual, they've been going for years.
They are comfortable - don't get any special details like lace for example. I'd say something high waisted and full will give you the most support - also nice extra support during a time when I'm bloated! As I wear with a pad, I just swap the underwear from night/day.
Yes, it was good I still have that pair. They feel like stiffer underwear. They have yet to come out with 'invisible panty line' period underwear tho, so I just use them overnight. Depending on my flow I would change pairs in the am, they last all day for me (usually I go through 3-4 pads for a heavy day)
I recently decided to try out menstrual panties and was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and convenient they are. Not having to worry about leaks or discomfort during my period has been a game-changer. Plus, the environmental benefits of using reusable period products like menstrual panties are a huge plus for me. I highly recommend giving them a try!
I’ve been product free for years! I use Dear Kates and highly recommend after testing several. I’ve got sensory issues so I have to find the perfect feel.
Tampons always made me nauseas and pads gave me rub burn.
