State of Alabama vs. Brittany Smith - a Netflix documentary
Brittany Smith was beaten, raped, and almost killed in her own home. Todd Smith (no relation) was the abuser. He was high on meth and holds dozens of previous convictions, including DV.
Scared for her life, Brittany (with Todd's accompany) went to the gas station and told the clerk what was happening, and also wrote down on a piece of paper "if something happends to me it was Todd Smith."
When Brittany's brother figured out what was happening, he came over to get Todd out of the house. Todd started choking him. Brittany shot him.
Brittany immediately went to jail pending a murder trial.
The nurse who saw Brittany documented 33 injuries to Brittany's body from her attack.
When Brittany was on the stand, the prosecutor asked if Todd had any weapons. She replied "his hands. And his penis. And his mouth." preach.
Spoiler: Brittany's motion to dismiss the case based on self-defense, Stand Your Ground law, was denied. She was given a plea deal for murder and, even though she didn't want to plead guilty, she couldn't trust the system so she accepted.
"Stand your ground" applies to non-white men, too, in most parts of the world. Just not to women.
