Not your normal Adam Sandler; lack of effort, paying off all my friends to be in a movie, script was written for the lowest denominator vehicle, think more like a dramatic turn like Punch Drunk love. His performance was very believable, I liked it. It was written very well, very watchable, quiet moments without too much action.
The setting is after the fall of communism and imagine if people had the technology to send people out on a long, long mission to space and the technology to communicate instantly with the person you send to space from far away.
However.
Spoilers:
The plot is basically man goes on adventure. His abandoned wife waits for him and decides she is done waiting for him. The very old trope of faithful wife waiting for husband dating back to the Greek and Roman myth of Odysseus. And the male protagonist has to be forced into confronting his emotions by an outside source (gladly though, it is not his wife doing the emotional heavy lifting.)
The ending is a little ambiguous, but still annoying to me because it hints at them getting back together.
I think this worth watching for the setting, the performance by Sandler, philosophical tone. Paul Dano was also very good and gives a lot of personality to his character. Have it on in the background, but don't be surprised if it catches your full attention.
Can’t stand him. He is also a genocidal enabler. All those celebrities don’t deserve our time.
