I just finished MAID on Netflix and it was incredible. The story is about a single mother, Alex, who is trying to escape her abusive relationship while taking care of her 2 year old daughter.
MAID should be FDS required viewing because:
-Amazing performances, storytelling, just all around a solid show
-It shows how important it is to 1. Have and KEEP your own money 2. Develop strong friendships outside of your partner
-A TON of women in emotionally/ financially abusive relationships have said how accurate the show is in depicting these kinds of abusive relationships and how hard it is to be taken seriously/ not be gaslight my everyone else in your life when you try to leave a relationship like this because "it's not that bad." (In the show, Alex's partner Sean is an alcoholic who never hit her, but chuck a glass vase right next to her head, isolates her from working, and slowly cuts her off from family and friends-- just because it's not physical doesn't mean it's not abuse).
Well, being so excited about reading more about the show, I made the mistake of going to Reddit to look at what other people thought about the show.
Holy sh*t
Scrotes on scrotes on scrotes siding with Alex's alcoholic ex, Sean because "he's trying to be better" (but of course if they portrayed Sean as heinously abusive, they'd complain it'd be "over the top and unrelaistic"; criticizing her and saying she's an unlikable character for "making poor decisions" (the whole point of the show is supposed to show how poverty and trauma affects the decisions people CAN make)-- and I'm sure these scrotes salivate over themselves over "anti-heros" like the Joker 🙄; and Nate-- ooooooh boy did they cry over poor ol Nate because the help he gave Alex (who he KNEW was leaving an abusive relationship) was only contingent upon the idea that one day she'd date him for being such a "nice guy."
I mean, Reddit hates women, what else is new?
But I decided shows like MAID and other media portraying abuse are GREAT vetting tools for LV/ NVM.
Do they side with the abuser?
Do they minimize the abuse on screen?
Do they criticize the abusee for not perfectly handling her abuse?
Do they "yeah but..." the abuse? (Yeah, that was really bad... BUT...)
It's amazing how many men will openly tell on themselves in these situations.
💯! I’ll add it to the list I made on FDS aligned media. Saw it when it came out and it was so heart wrenching and resonant. It reminded me of my experience with Harvard Guy, sans the kid. I was so pleased with the triumphant ending.
I watched this when it came out and loved it!
I was so happy by the end that she levelled up
it hit me hard when she left and couldn't see the abuse and felt that it wasn’t “that bad”
when I was younger I was with an abusive man but he didn’t hit me and I thought he couldn't be that bad. I realized a lot when I left.
i truly believe this show should be required viewing for every woman out there
Nate was making my skin croll 🤢🤢🤢. If the ick was a person it would be Nate
I loved this show!! In many instances I resonated with an experience. Like so much it made me cry/realize another layer of trauma.
It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I remember feeling sad for her mom.
Oh my gosh, I loved this show from what I saw and yes it is so accurate. I couldn't watch past when her daughter started getting sick in the shitty social housing. I couldn't bear to watch it if she passed away! Can someone let me know if the daughter survives and then I can watch the rest??
Will add this to my watchlist, but fr, this could work as a vetting tool. Just pick out a show like this, and ask them "Hey, did you watch ____ and what did you think of it?"
This show was very accurate, except the part where the scrote ex suddenly has a change of heart at the end. Kind of a Hollywood bullshit happy ending, but I guess the truth is too depressing.
thank you for the recommend! I needed a new show to watch and really loved the first couple episodes!
seems accurate so far about portraying both abuse and poverty cycles. I like that Sean wasn’t just shown as pure evil, i could see just in these episodes how much hope she had that he would change and how he made it seem like a possibility.
i don’t want to spoil it for myself by reading internet comments about it but definitely am expecting that he continues to be abusive and that here are people on the internet defending him. Might come back to comment later but yes I definitely am hooked!
