I’ve been recommended this sitcom by many friends over the years. My favorite show or satire ever was / is “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” where they clearly clown on lvm and lvw. Does Modern Family have that same obvious satirical element? Or does it glamorize / try to justify extreme age gaps? I’ve always been turned off from trying out Modern Family whenever I remembered that Sofia Vegara was casted as Ed O’ Neil’s much younger wife.
I guess I’m glad they at least met when she was in her mid-late 30s instead of when she was even younger? I still get the ick.
Jay Is 25 Years Older Than Gloria In Modern Family. When they met, Gloria was around 37 years old and Jay was around 62.
I watched all seasons of it, and it was typical American sitcom fodder with some good moments, but it's generally pretty sexist and overall very reliant on stereotypes. I wouldn't watch it again. ETA: the age difference between Jay and Gloria is played for laughs but in general their marriage is supposed to be romantic / inspiring, and I didn't like that at all. I also didn't like how Gloria's sister is protrayed as being super envious of her new life, as if every woman from an underprivileged background was just waiting for that shriveled up white D.
It definitely has a lot of sexist tropes with creepy men.
I haven’t watched the whole show but I remember being grossed out when Phil (Claire’s husband, Jay’s son in law) was blatantly infatuated with and hitting on Gloria. They portray Phil as the “bumbling incompetent goofball who does stupid things but is still well meaning and loves his family”. So he is falling all over himself for Gloria in front of his wife Claire, and Claire has to scold him and take control of him so that he doesn’t do anything stupid.
Of course it’s just played off for laughs and Phil just “can’t help himself” and needs his wife to discipline him to get him to act right.
Anyway, this dynamic always really put me off of the show. There are definitely some funny scenes but if you watch it be prepared for some creepy stuff like that.
The age gap thing creeped me out enough to never even watch modern family.
I also liked Seinfeld a lot. It's pretty funny that the men are average or below average like George, but still somehow act picky about the women they date. All wayyy out of their league.
Arrested development is another favorite of mine that seems to have a pretty big fan overlap with always sunny. Not so much specifically satire on creepy men, more so of wealthy privileged people.
It's a pretty hackneyed boomer sitcom that isn't worth watching when there are plenty of better comedy shows out there.
Since you like it's always sunny, try AP Bio with Glen Howerton, Veep, Nathan For You and Jury Duty
I've watched a few episodes, and I agree with the others. It's an okay show. Can you talk about Always Sunny? I've never watched it, and from the snippets I've seen it of it, I didn't realize it was about roasting scrotes or even remotely FDS leaning.
Kevin Can F**k Himself is a good one. It's a dark comedy about exposing weaponized incompetence of the common trope of the lovable but too stupid husband, and how the nagging wife is actually right.
I watched when it came out and thought it was good at the time.
I'm gonna guess it's very dated now. There's some funny elements from what I remember.
It's just a basic show. Nothing ground breaking.
I'd say it's a good show to have on if you're doing housework or something like that. You don't need to pay too much attention to it.
