I’ve been recommended this sitcom by many friends over the years. My favorite show or satire ever was / is “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” where they clearly clown on lvm and lvw. Does Modern Family have that same obvious satirical element? Or does it glamorize / try to justify extreme age gaps? I’ve always been turned off from trying out Modern Family whenever I remembered that Sofia Vegara was casted as Ed O’ Neil’s much younger wife.
I guess I’m glad they at least met when she was in her mid-late 30s instead of when she was even younger? I still get the ick.
Jay Is 25 Years Older Than Gloria In Modern Family. When they met, Gloria was around 37 years old and Jay was around 62.
It definitely has a lot of sexist tropes with creepy men.
I haven’t watched the whole show but I remember being grossed out when Phil (Claire’s husband, Jay’s son in law) was blatantly infatuated with and hitting on Gloria. They portray Phil as the “bumbling incompetent goofball who does stupid things but is still well meaning and loves his family”. So he is falling all over himself for Gloria in front of his wife Claire, and Claire has to scold him and take control of him so that he doesn’t do anything stupid.
Of course it’s just played off for laughs and Phil just “can’t help himself” and needs his wife to discipline him to get him to act right.
Anyway, this dynamic always really put me off of the show. There are definitely some funny scenes but if you watch it be prepared for some creepy stuff like that.
