I’m just so frustrated right now. I’ve tried watching four different movies tonight, and after the election results, I’m just especially not in the mood to watch depictions of male violence against women. And every movie I picked, no matter how benign the description, ended up having one to many scenes of this content.
It’s to the point where I have to look up parents guide before watching a movie, but why do I have to do that? Why is this content SO prevalent in mainstream media that I explicitly have to go out of my way to avoid it? I’m just so frustrated and I don’t have anyone in real life that could understand
No advice, but just here to say I completely relate. Most movie nights, I find myself only watching Studio Ghibli, feel good / kids films, etc. Same with books, I even struggle with my usual feminist literature if it contains triggers.
I even explained to someone the ofher day that I need "feel good" movie recs, and since I'm currently reading LOTR that person recommended I watch GoT...
This website is great for checking if a movie or TV show has triggering content before you watch it:
It obviously doesn't have every movie and show that exists, but pretty much everything popular or current is covered. I absolutely can't stand to watch violence against animals and I often use that site to check movies and shows before I watch them.
Someone else can help me with this as I'm sure they'll know. I think there is a rating system, (I can't remember the name of it!) that rates how female friendly/feminist a film is (relating to proportion of women in story line, roles they play, revolve around m,en, talk about men etc). Besdel scale or something like that I forget the name.
If there is a database of some kind you might be able to navigate by rating.
It's gotten much worse in recent years. so much glorified violence and crao in general.
I ten towards 'older' stuff now. The 90s had their flaws, but it's much more wholesome than much of the content produced these days.
There are outlier dramas and things that are nice like This is Us etc (tv)... your post could def be an opportunity for us to crowd source a list together of female friendly movies :)
My go to movie is mothman prophecies. It's kinda spooky and scary though. But the female lead is great and they don't force a love story between here and the male lead just mutual admiration.
Bump! There's a podcast called The Bechdel Cast I think it might be up your alley.
