Currently watching a documentary The Business of Birth Control
Unfortunately they have a pro-trans paragraph under the video, but really interesting information about serious side effects (pulmonary embolism, depression, etc) and pharmaceutical industry's influence, including ties with the FDA.
I've experienced negative side effects myself and no longer use birth control beyond abstinence and fertility awareness.

EDIT: finished the documentary. They just had to add some nonsense about gender identity and trans people towards the end 😒
Hi ladies, I’m closing comments on this post because frankly I’m tired of receiving forum reports over minor disagreements. The point OP is making is that hormonal birth control can have negative biological side effects because it disrupts women’s natural ovulatory cycles. That’s it. No one is advocating for banning birth control and no one is victim blaming. Deciding to take the pill is a highly personal decision. Thanks!
Why does like every mention of women's reproductive issues have to include some disclaimers about trans people? Like even just talking about the fact that we have material, biological issues to deal with is so offensive? Anyway, this doc seems interesting - thanks OP! I loved birth control. The only negative side effect I had was weight gain, but it was the only thing that fixed my insomnia. I tried 6 prescription sleeping medications, including a benzo, which didn't work. I always wished I could just quit it though since then I wouldn't be on any medications, and my period itself came like clockwork with basically no other symptoms other than insomnia.
I finally quit it for 3 months now (after being on it for 3 years) and the insomnia hasn't come back, so fingers crossed! I definitely don't see the point of taking it for non-medical reasons. EDIT: ACK I LOVE your username OP.
Completely agree. Birth control should be a last resort for a woman who have painful periods, hormone fluctuations, acne, etc that has not responded to lifestyle modifications and other treatments.
It frustrates me that birth control pills are given out like candy these days. Teenagers come in with a little bit of acne, and they are immediately offered birth control pills without exploring other avenues first.
Using birth control pills as a first line defense to not get pregnant is a dumb idea in my view. If there is a specific reason why non-hormonal methods like condoms, a copper IUD, and fertility tracking don't work, then the pills should be viewed as an option.
reading the story of the history of birth control still blows my mind. society is so twisted. sometimes i really hate it here.
