Meet Sir Matthew Hale, a person SCOTUS Judge Alito referenced for his reasons to ban abortion. Matthew Hale believed in marital rape. He argued that women's bodies belonged to men, first to their fathers when born, then to their husbands when they were married. We were not seen as individual, autonomous humans.
He used the writings of St. Paul to subjugate women. He also fully believed in marital rape, because if the woman belongs to the man and is a arm of himself, then you cannot rape yourself. Women also couldn't legally say no to sex, becuase they had no autonomy and no legal rights. Denying sex to your husband was legally a crime. He also fully supported beating women for their own good. This stand up guy also presided over witch trials where 2 women were murdered by him for the crime of "witchcraft." You see, in his day, widows, who had their husband's property were seen as a community and social threat for being independant and without a man to control their actions. Many were murdered as witches.
So, if you read Alito's anti-Roe draft and you see the references to Matthew Hale, this is the guy that Alito leans on to ban abortion. The stinking misogyny never falls far from the rotten tree.
