Today, I briefly heard a feature on NPR’s Takeaway on sex work. I wanted to get your thoughts on this piece (you can read the transcript):

It was certainly interesting to hear about historical politics regarding prostitution. I found a lot of things frustrating about this talk. But what struck me is that they just never name the problem: men. Patriarchy. Misogyny.
For as deep as they went, nothing is mentioned about the fact that men are buyers and women are the product. That we’re the sex workers while men largely aren’t. And women aren’t out here soliciting for sex yet men are.
And for a much as they talk about “economic independence” there’s no criticism of capitalism and the idea of people selling themselves as the highest form of capitalism should not even happen. Why do we entertain this?? Because me working my 9-5 job working with photoshop is in the same realm as sex work am I right 🤡
These people are trying to normalize dangerous systems that are built upon our oppression. Honestly, I would be very interested in what the pod hosts thought about this.
What would you expect? They call it sex work. People with knowledge and empathy for women call it prostitution and exploitation.
Funny how the only things that get pushed in our patriarchal society are things that NEVER benefit women and girls (without atleast completely benefiting men). Sex work, "50/50", working mom (especially when married to a man), liberal/"choice" feminism. Funny how in a misogynistic world , what is pushed forward are misogynistic trends. Like that time in that show Adam ruins everything, he was talking about women who prostituted themselves and gave the proceeds to orphaned children to make a point that women (being forced to, due to circumstances) sell themselves is good. Not that women are good, but that sex work is good and okay. But he strangely fails to mention the stds, abuse, rape and chances of being found in a dumspster that a woman risks because of selling herself to the dangerous sex. Bruh.
Its like “underage prostitutes” and “violence against women”. So they can whitewash the problem … men.
NPR has been sliding back towards lack of journalistic integrity for years now. Any story that isn't highlighting how Ghislaine Maxwell / Jeff Epstein got away with it for decades, isn't highlighting their client list, isn't highlighting how embedded they were with politicians and Ivy League universities, is doing it so wrong
I think Donald Trump kind of broke NPR, to be honest. They used to be much better. They were slightly Left-leaning, of course, but not too bad, still better than most other news sources. That seemed to change after the 2016 election. They still have some nice programming when it comes to music or nature stuff, but if it’s even remotely political they lose all self-awareness and start cherry-picking information and spinning the rhetoric until it matches the Left’s agenda They’re really just a mouthpiece for Liberals at this point. I voted Democrat, and even I’m disappointed in how biased they’ve become.
