This is a suggestion for the podcast but also for a discussion. I think about this A lot, but Im sure everyone has noticed how in the past 20 years female music artists have been more and more sexualised. The clothes they are made to wear are more and more revealing to the point it’s ridiculous, the lyrics more and more explicit and the poses and dances in pictures and music videos as well.
It makes me think that they’re just a part of promoting the sex work industry right now and grooming young women and girls into believing that sexualising oneself and being sexual is the way to make it. Its not about the music it’s about SEX, because “sex sells”.
And sadly that’s how it is for these artists as well, as they often can’t progress in their careers WITHOUT putting on this over sexualised image. It’s so sad. And of course then it’s put under the disguise of “feminism and liberating feminine sexuality”. Anyways this is my first post hope it inspires someone.
This also explains why Hollywood fakes everything, fake relationships, fake marriages, fake pregnancies etc... because the hetsex couple sells, the artists that are let to come out freely is not because their management, label whatever agreed to let them to, but it's because people were complaining there was lack of diversity in Hollywood so they want to cover it up with a few chosen artists. For the rest they have to beard because of too closed minded parents, and because they already have the fame of being male heartthrobs or female men eaters, so it's too late, and the others have to pr, because they need to promote whatever project they're doing. Only a few het couples are real in Hollywood. They are so sexualized even men are sexualized nowadays. Of course for women it's always worse and with twitter being accessible to anyone, including minors, the sexualization is even bigger because fans nowadays are leaving sexual messages under their twitter and they're very graphic, like: hey @xname I want to suck your cock, hey @xname put your cock inside me and wreck my vagina. I absolutely completely agree and I'm right there with you! Definitely an influence of p*** but it's sort of makes me wonder if it's some kind of nefarious passive aggressive BS way that men have steered this. Like women have been refusing to cooperate directly so if you can spin it so that it's a way to be empowered and liberated then you get the women to go along with you. Same thing with all the sex positivity crap and having a million partners and sharing partners. I did a lot of research on this for about a year and a half very recently and the men and women both try to promote it as being something that is really healthy and really great and empowering for women because women get the action started or because women pick the partners for the couple or because women can be the sex club and can be naked or have naked and not have men touch them and be respectful if they don't want to be touched. I'm looking at this thinking these are concessions men are willing to make to have access to sex and women's bodies even if it's just to look. And it's kind of late so I don't know if any of my points are connecting or making any sense but I feel like it's more male manipulation behind the scenes to keep us under control somehow. But spinning it in a new way so we're doing it to ourselves....And because it's under the guise of empowerment and liberation it's easier to groom the younger crowd.
This is an effect of the porn industry becoming more mainstream. The hypersexualization and objectification of women is linked to the social acceptance of porn. Gail Dines goes over this really well
