:( Hope you're doing okay OP. Pet deaths hit harder than any breakup. I've honestly never felt the kind of boundless, trusting, and reciprocal love with a human the way I have with my cat. This is honestly the main reason I went vegan. There's just something special about animals.
To everyone who has liked or commented: you have no idea how much this has helped me. I haven't really been able to grieve as it is not socially acceptable to be outwardly distraught over an animal passing. Sharing his photo and having others acknowledge that it's okay to be sad has made a huge difference. You are kind and compassionate souls. Thank you.
It took years for my mom to get over our dog passing away almost 10 years ago. They had a special bond. She always said his eyes reminded him of her father's eyes. It's definitely a real loss, people who say otherwise are just soulless.
I'm so sorry for your loss! I remember facing a family dog passing away a few years ago and the pain and the grief that came with it was brutal. Grew up with her ever since I was in elementary school... it really hurts to lose a fur friend like that. Your dog is so handsome!
Yes! That is what he was. Good eye. Though obviously he can never be replaced, I hope to get another of the same breed. He was quite healthy until age 16 when his hips and hind legs started to go.
I’m crying with you, OP. My sweetie passed this past August. He was with me through the most important years of my life. When he died, I suddenly got so much clarity and ended my engagement. And I’m so glad I did. I’m fortunate to have lots of space and was able to lay him to rest on my land. I can see his flowerbed from my kitchen window. Not only that — and I know this will sound INSANE but it’s 100% true — an angel came to me a couple of days before he died. And a couple of hours before he died he suddenly came back to life and was clearly looking at something behind and above my head as I held him on my chest. I knew the angels were coming for him. I know he’s in heaven and I’ll see him again!! Hugs to you.
Dear Fern, thank you so much for sharing that message. I'm so sorry for your loss. It's interesting you mention he was looking above you. On his last morning, our dog kept looking upward. He was watching the sky and the trees. I had never seen him do that before. It impacted me deeply; I can't get it out of my mind, and I wrote it into a short story I was working on. It was like he had access to clear sight and some other plane of existence.
Thank you. He was a big dog - over 100 lbs - but a gentle giant. Never bit anyone and would only bark when required. He was extremely smart and liked to open gifts, throw toys sarcastically, and make his "rounds" of the house to check on what everyone was doing.
Such a beautiful dog! Sending you lots of love and hugs. My two cats have been with me through multiple men and broken relationships - and agreed, they’re the highest value men I know!
Thank you. I mean, you should have seen me when the realization hit that this guy was literally the only guy who didn't hurt me. I mean obviously he was a dog... but the symbolism was stark. I lost it.

Animals are probably the only beings capable of giving unconditional love. I’m so sorry for your loss
Thank you. Sorry to hear you lost your dog, too. It's incredibly hard. I carry some of his fur in my purse everywhere I go. I know I will never forget him.

He was gorgeous. Looks like a Belgian shepherd Groenendael - my fav breed. :)
