I don't even know how to compile my frustration into words but there it goes:
I hate that society is so pornsick and misogynistic that:
- You can't seem to buy briefs/underpants/knickers whatevs anywhere that actually covers your butt anymore and that don't land inside your butt
- Local underwear brands buy large roadside signs and create male gaze advertising for their shitty underwear which doesn't even fit me or most women that aren't teenagers, even though I generally fit into size S
- I hate that I can't walk, workout or just do random things all day without having to pull out stupid briefs out of my butt all the time
- Bodysuits, just as Calyee Cresta explains above, seem to have recently become mostly thong bodysuits, making them kinda useless
And don't get me started on bras. That industry is so vastly fucked up I can't even.
Sidenote, I don't live in the US.
- I hate that most clothing doesn't take into account that women actually have hips and busts
- Oh and also, what's with those buttugly pointy shoes?
What are your daily observances in regards to fashion apart from the pocket topic that grind your gears?
I think most of these are obvious cost saving measures by the people who make that stuff:
- Only cropped tops and the non-cropped options are all so thin they are actually see through? Great: we saved money on fabric AND the dumb consumers will have to buy a second (third, fourth...) piece of clothing to actually be decently covered!
- All cuts are oversized and basically too short, boxy rectangles? Great: so much easier, faster and cheaper to sew en masse than something that actually takes real bodyshapes into account!
- The quality we produce is so bad that no item actually lasts longer than a year? Great: people will have to buy a completely new wardrobe every year!
I feel your pain. I'm a tall, thin, hourglass body shape and finding a work appropriate white (or light blue, light grey...) blouse that is
a) not fucking see through
b) fitted (!!!!) and not oversized and making it look like I am 20kg heavier and wearing my dad's old shirts
c) long enough to tuck in so it doesn't slip out whenever I lift my arms
d) not made of a crappy, cheap plastic blend
e) has sleeves that are long enough for a person with actual arms
f) has a waist that doesn't sit at the height of my boobs
is pure hell. I buy high end brands second hand and one size too big and get them tailored by now. I still grieve every time I have to get rid of a top that fit me well because it's reached the end of its lifetime.
Omg seriously. I had a shop assistant telling me that the underwear I wanted to buy was 'not that sexy'. First of all: Rude. Second of all: Ok? So? And? Maybe I just want to fucking function without wondering every single fucking second of the day if I'm hOt oR sExY?
I wear Fantasie briefs. They’re seamless, full coverage and high waisted. They’re proper knickers for actual adult women. I’m slowly building a wardrobe that actually works for my life but it takes far more effort than seems reasonable and none of it is cheap.
Since the pandemic I have switched to 100% cotton high waisted granny panties with full butt coverage and 100% cotton sports bras. It’s so comfy. Never going back! I recommend Wirarpa and Thunderpants as brands, but there’s a lot of women-run Etsy shops making comfy underwear too these days.
I’m ready for high ankle tapered pants and jeans to die. If I wanted capris that would cut off the blood flow to my feet then I’d buy capris that cut off the blood flow to my feet. Can we have normal length pants that have bigger leg holes than leggings please?
Those stupid half sweaters that don't fully cover you.
I also find women’s workout wear infuriating! Some of us actually have large biceps if we workout and lift weights regularly - why are all the sleeves so goddamn skinny?? I need my blood to actually circulate down to my fingers. And don’t even get me started on lack of pockets
I'm ready for overalls to make the comeback they deserve!! No need for bodysuits when you have high waisted overalls holding true to their purpose and doing the work no belt could stand during activities
All pants, leggings, and tights for the last few years have been control top/tummy panel/whatever offensive euphemism for "too tight". Like EVERY single thing I try on has this "feature", it's not even optional. Because we are ALL ashamed of our stomachs, and we ALL want to squash our stomachs into pants that are too tight, or we damn well better anyway! I've bought so many things thinking maybe they'll be comfortable, just to wear them once and get indigestion and toss them straight in the donate pile. I just want pants that fit and are comfortable, belly rolls be damned!
Environmentally bad. Fast fashion has made so many clothes there is landfills full of them. They send the excess clothes to third world countries and disrupted the local industry putting local people out of business.
I also really hate pointed toe shoes, they hurt my feet so quickly because they force them in such an unnatural position. I can manage rounded or almond toe heels no problem, yet I swear most shoes which look good are pointed.
The lack of good looking comfortable flats is another thing which winds me up. I swear I either get loafers or barely there ballerina flats with no support. Why can't comfortable shoes be made to look pretty?
This is why I almost always thrift for my clothes and try to look for more vintage pieces not because its trendy but because they‘re not ridiculously oversexualized. Plus they tend to have a more timeless look
I haven't kept up with the trends for probably the last 15 years. The only one I did buy into was leggings, oversize sweaters, and tall boots since that's very similar to my barn uniform.
I'm tall with really long arms, a super short torso, tiny waist, and wide hips. Nothing but equestrian wear ever fits me right. Cruel Girl jeans are the only reason I survived the 2000s without crack showing lol. They're designed for equestrians so they're long length, high rise in the back, and loosely tailored enough to be comfortable.
Everything else I make or tailor. I've been sewing since I was a kid so I just make my own stuff, or I buy a size or two bigger than I need and my mom helps me tailor it.
As a former fat girl, and someone who at 50+ is just now into a basic XL size, I’m all about comfort first. Honestly I’ve always been about comfort since plus size fashion has only just emerged when I was sizing down out of it. Wear what’s comfortable. Shop across the aisle as needed. As an unfashionable woman, I’m going to go with comfort over style every single time. My $0.02.
I go to specific clothing stores that look amazing and feminine without much cleavage. However, very costly for the average woman which truly sucks in my opinion but it’s an investment. But to add to your post, I went shoe shopping today and mostly everything is so bulky or all platforms like stripper shoes. Who called this a trend? In neon ugly colours, platform shoes that strippers and sex workers usually wear and now they sell them everywhere!!!!? It’s taking me forever to find a decent pair of shoes for a decent price. I’m just disturbed and I literally told the women who work at those stores “What is going on???? Why all the platform stripper looking trend?” Maybe they are all targeting only fans and empowered IG influencers these days 🤢
Truth! Why is it almost impossible to find women's underwear with adequate crotch and butt coverage??? It's infuriating because every boxer brief I've tried on has been comfortable and full coverage. Men don't even have to think about it. On the other hand, I have spent a ton of time and money looking for a full coverage, comfortable, and non-hideous underwear... I end up mostly wearing men's boxer briefs, but the extra crotch space is fugly.
I have never had women's boyshorts that don't ride up. Also, most have center seams and poor crotch/butt coverage...
Also f*ck bras. Expensive, uncomfortable, don't prevent sagging, and most are handwash only. But most blouses/ dressy tops are sheer and/or super thin 🙄 god forbid someone notices a female nipple
Ugh yes about the underwear. I'm prone to bartholins cysts and ingrown hairs on my hoohah and even normal waisted Hanes briefs ride my buttcrack when I run. I have to be so very careful of the pants I wear on running apparatus and obviously it's complicated at the gym since you really can't just pick slight sweaty wedgies. I've totally farted or pretended to fart before to make people give me space at the gym though as a quick side note. No effs given. 😂 my brain stops me short at the wedgie picking though for whatever reason 😂
I find thongs and t-backs so much more comfortable! But I have a very high, round firm bum, so it sits nicely in there and I forget it’s even on
