Athena was reported missing Wednesday and authorities launched a search for her across Wise County, located northwest of Fort Worth. Authorities believe the young girl was killed within an hour after her kidnapping from her family’s driveway, which is about 200 yards from her home.
Tanner Lynn Horner, 31, is being held in Wise County jail on capital murder and aggravated kidnapping charges, according to its website. Bond was set at $1.5 million, Akin said. It was unclear whether Horner had an attorney Friday.
Horner, identified by authorities as a contract driver for FedEx, was allegedly making a delivery to Athena’s home at the time she disappeared.
Earlier Friday, police say they received a tip that helped investigators determine Horner abducted the child from her driveway.
Strand’s mother, Maitlyn Presley Gandy, said her daughter was taken from her by “a sick, cruel monster for absolutely no reason,” she wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday morning.
“I cannot describe the pain and absolute anger I feel. Missing her doesn’t cover how I feel,” Gandy said in the post accompanying a video of Athena, then age 3 “I want the world to know my baby, my first baby, my first true love, the reason I breathe.”

it is so sad that they didn’t take the reports seriously. A lot of these cases are so preventable-if they would just take womens‘ concerns about child molestors and rapists seriously when reported the first time.
Something like the Strand murder is almost never their first time. They rape first, and when they get away with it, they move onto murder. Rape isn’t considered a serious crime, as they let these monsters go repeatedly. I even saw a case where a guy who’d murdered 2 children, a boy and a girl in NJ, was released from prison, and he went on a raping and killing spree. After the first offense, the man should be castrated. After that, if he persists in violence, he should be executed. There is NO rehab for predators. It’s like asking a crocodile not to eat you. I read in Germany now that they’re doing experiments with taking convicted rapists to prostitutes to give them experience with women and to teach them about consent. I don’t know what it’s gonna take for women and girls to be considered human beings by males, but it needs to happen NOW. No more rapes and murders! No more being soft on criminals. Anyone who’s raped should go immediately to the hospital afterwards, have a rape kit done, and file a police report. Film the entire process just in case the police try to get cute with you and won’t listen. And keep speaking out like this girl did online about Tanner—even if nobody believes you—because if he raped you, you can bet you’re not gonna be his only victim. There will always be more.
