Even the way we talk about men's violence shows that society views it as an unavoidable part of life, like bad weather. The violence is talked about using passive constructions. Recently "women were getting punched in NY" - pretty sure there was an active subject there doing the punching, not just a severed hand suspended in mid-air that women accidentally walked into?
Deep down people know the true nature of males, so the blame falls on women. We used to chaperone young women - and I think we still should. If you are ever alone with a man and he does something inappropriate (if you can imagine such a thing...) then people's instict is to ask you "what were you doing at his place/in his car/alone with him" because they know what men are like the split second they have you isolated.. no one gasps and says "that's unacceptable that a man would do such a thing!" Because we all know.
