I've never really gotten a convincing or actual answer on the origins of misogyny, hence why asking about it here, on FDS.
Can anyone please give insight into where it came from, how it started and why it became a thing in society?
I'd really love to get answers to this question because it's a question I always think about.
You need to read @Leveled Up 's answer for a post title "Males, Monogamy, and Mate Guarding" (search the title)
I really believe the theory that agriculture made women second class citizens. That's why we have parts that are purely for pleasure—clitoris, labia. They exist purely for pleasure, nit reproductive purposes.
Another video that explains it well
Male sexual aggression towards females is as old as sexual reproduction and exists in many animal species. That is just the result of the fact that females bear the burden of reproduction and males benefit from impregnating as many females as possible (from an evolutionary perspective). As for patriarchy and systemic oppression, I think that it arose and developed as our technology progressed. Not all hunter gatherer societies were/are patriarchal, some were egalitarian, however in some groups after stone tools and tribes were formed, the strongest individuals (men) took control of the tribe and took as many women as they wanted as property- the beginning of women's oppression and subservience. The development of agriculture led to the existence of private property and therefore the need to control women through marriage to ensure inheritance. This also relates to, the requirement for women to be virgins at marriage, the use of women for unpaid domestic labour, inability of women to own property, preference for sons over daughters, and so on. I've heard that Engels The Origin of Family, Private Property and the State is a good book on this topic but haven't read it myself. If women were the stronger sex or laid eggs instead of going through pregnancy, birth & lactation I think things would have ended up very differently!
The really short answer is that misogyny is a by-product of patriarchy, which is a system men have been using as a cheat for reproductive success for thousands of years. Instead of competing with other men for women's attention and sex, as is natural, they rigged society and economics in their favor so they cooperate with other men to keep all women under-heel and thus, easier for all of them to access us for sex, labor, amusement, and so on, because we need(ed) to keep in their good graces for survival or our children's survival. You can't oppress someone and be aware of their humanity at the same time, so misogyny is the made-up rationale for an unjust society. Woman bad. Man good. Man always right. Women always wrong. Patriarchy and woman-hating became popular because 1) it was usually spread through violent means, men thundering in on horseback and slicing off other men's heads and women who weren't cooperative enough, killing a chunk of the more egalitarian-minded population and terrifying the rest, and 2) It was a very attractive system to ye-olde incels and men who were yearning for more prestige, recognition, and sex.
Finally, I always recommend the book, The Chalice and the Blade by Riane Eisler. It's a lot of supposition since it's digging very, very far back into human history, but it's a compelling and thought-provoking read nonetheless.
The shift from hunting and gathering into agrarian societies was a catalyst for patriarchal systems.
My father was a professor of sociology. My brother is a professor of political science. I have academics all over my family and have heard pretty much every argument. This channel does a FABULOUS jobs of examining the history of power structures and breaking down HOW they formed:
This one covers the origins of patriarchy:

I have wondered what the root of misogyny is from time to time also. At times I explained it away by saying it was caused by various factors, economic (agricultural included), history, religion, social, hormonal, behavioural and more. But it's not any of these. We all have history, genetic factors etc, we all have a unique economic experience in our lifetimes, social and religious pressures, as well as hormones driving us but we don't decide to act on them. Key words being DECISIONS and ACTIONS. I believe it is a mindset. Courage, compassion and responsibility are missing. But then it leads back to society pressures forcing certain people to act right, when under pressure they may freely act wrongly knowingly. Very few people can behave morally right naturally. Misogyny is not one factor unfortunately.
Thank you for your comments. It makes a lot of sense!
I blame testosterone. It makes them want us, which makes them resent us, and testosterone also fuels that into anger. Then their inflated egos from being physically larger and stronger makes them want to take what they want from us and also hurt us because of the resentment and anger. The negative feelings towards women are then reinforced in young boys who don’t have those testosterone levels yet. They’re taught that we’re beneath them in the social hierarchy. By the time they hit puberty they’ve had misogynistic ideas thrust upon them their entire lives and the surge of testosterone turns the conditioning into disdain and objectification. Then it’s upheld by convincing women and girls that our only value is in how physically attractive we are via the male gaze and our ability to be impregnated/give birth. We’re wrongly taught that we’re all in competition with one another. Some women take these terrible messages to heart and the internalized misogyny causes them to work directly with their oppressors to continue the cycle of abuse on other women.
Late to this party, but this video I found yesterday sums it up nicely. Basically, it’s a problem within the y evolved male brain - it’s endemic and biological, and it’s a mental disorder.
I wrote the comments below as well, but this video really highlights that unless males are socialized FROM BIRTH to respect and love women, their brains will default to hatred and aggression toward women.
