This study on prime-aged men (25-54) not in the labour force is written by a man who argues that men don’t deserve universal basic income because statistics show millions of men are already doing absolutely nothing but watch a screen and get high when their basic costs of living are covered by another party. His research reveals a continuously increasing epidemic of men who are utterly useless by choice.

Let’s not pretend this NILF epidemic is unrelated to women entering the labour force and post secondary education after World War II. Let’s not pretend it’s unrelated to the upticks in the popularity of the online manosphere, toxic masculinity, and violence against women and children. It’s not just the US, it’s not just the west —this is a global crisis. These men are killing women and killing society. I want to see government intervention and proposed solutions instead of yet another article of statistics outlining how bad things are. They’re bad, now what are we going to do about it?
“For over half a century, the growth in America’s population of prime-age NILF men has been astonishingly steady and regular, rising by roughly 10,000 each month from 1965 to 2019.”
“Their time freed from work is not repurposed into helping out around the home, such as doing housework, cooking, and other tasks of home maintenance. In fact, they devote significantly less time to such home chores than unemployed men—less, too, than women with jobs. NILF men also spend much less time helping to care for other household members than working women—less time, as well, than unemployed men.“
”The biggest difference between the daily schedules of NILF men and everyone else comes in what the ATUS calls ‘socializing, relaxing, and leisure‘[…] On average, prime-age NILF men spend almost seven and a half hours a day in such diversions—over four hours a day more than working women, nearly four hours a day more than working men, and over an hour more than jobless men looking for work.”
“Men without work who are not looking for jobs and not engaged in training spend almost three times as many hours in front of screens as working women and well over twice as many as working men. Strikingly, they also report over 300 hours more screen time per year than their unemployed counterparts.”
“Almost half of NILF men reported taking some form of pain medication every day. The fraction for NEET men would likely be higher still. The rhythms of life for a great many of the prime-age men in America currently disengaged with the world of work is defined not simply by days and nights sitting in front of screens—but sitting in front of screens while numbed or stoned.“
So they don’t want to work and don’t think they should have to work, but when men don’t work they become listless, purposeless, severely depressed, and suicidal? The math ain’t mathing.
The author’s conclusion (I wish it was that women deserve UBI but men don’t!):
“The patterns we have presented on the daily routines of existing work-free men should make proponents of the UBI think long and hard. Instead of producing new community activists, composers, and philosophers, more paid worklessness in America might only further deplete our nation’s social capital at a time when good citizenship is already in painfully short supply.”
Honestly I think that UBI would be great to end the epidemic of violence against women. Economic violence and unemployment is still the n.1 reasons women stay with abusive scrotes in many parts of the world. UBI would vastly improve the quality of life of those women who are now disadvantaged in society and would give them/us more power. If this means that more scrotes becomes gamers, hermits and disappear from public life and lose all relevance, that's fine by me. They can stay in the basement while we run society.
Edit: also, kind of mysogynistic to make an analysis of UBI that only addresses its impact on men and doesn't even remotely consider the benefits for women. It's like we don't exist basically. "Men waste benefits=benefits bad".
I think this conversation wouldn't be so necessary if most jobs (even entry-level or "lowly" ones) in the Western world paid enough for someone to reasonably support themselves. I hate how capitalism pretends fast food workers or custodians who maybe can't be a retail manager don't deserve to live too. And of course this disproportionately affects women.
ETA: Not excusing men who can (but do not) work. Just saying a lot of men try to pressure us into being breadwinners and that would mean women going from 2 jobs to 3 jobs, etc. "Hustle" culture, "boss babe," and other euphemisms for capitalist exploitation of the working class (uni or not) make me so angry...

Assuming UBI is a Benefit of sorts, I must say, I’m a disabled woman and I still have ambition and interest in money. I think women and confirmed/diagnosed disabled people should be given benefits, but NOT able-bodied, entitled men. I know one guy who isn’t working who does have some neurodiversity issues, but when we mention work, he always makes up excuses and has this idea that he shouldn’t have to do a job he dislikes anymore, but he has a rigid idea of the exact job he wants, and in the meantime, nothing else will do, so he stays indoors and games. P.S. he also dreams of being a rich philanthropist with lots of women 🤦🏼♀️
I'm not for UBI for a lot of reasons- and this is one of them
It's not just moms. It's women whose careers or education never took off because of scrotes. It's women who are recovering from PTSDs from bad relationships with scrotes and are unable to function and have to get therapy. It's young women who have abusive families of origins. It's women who need to leave scrotes but can't. Women who cant make a living and are forced into prostitution of some kind. We're talking millions of women here. Men will never allow a feminist basic income for obvious reasons so bring on UBI and let them write themselves off history by masturbating into oblivion if that's what the want.
Wait. Since we are talking about the scum here. I want to bring up the framework of the society with a focus on isolating these individuals. They somewhere down the line choose to live this life. Isolation is where they thrive, and isolating them from your productive lives is what is recommended.
Basically, the west needs to realize that these men have been part of the history and are called hermits. There's a whole guide in the Indian diaspora about dealing with hermits. Spoiler alert: As a woman, not my problem. Also, you may give them alms but UBI?
In my opinion UBI is wishful thinking, or "arguing from a perfect world perspective."
I think UBI would just implode humanity faster. I think the only way UBI would ever help, is if good people waaay outnumbered evil people. Which is honestly, just wishful thinking. 🤷
I don't disagree that these statistics are alarming. I'd also say they have to do something with the rise of mental illness. I'm not making an excuse for these men, and I mostly definitely wouldn't want to be with one, but I do believe not all of them act like they do purely by choice. Many people nowadays struggle with a lack of purpose, and I really can't blame them. Women are generally better at self flagellation in order to keep up with their lives, but this comes back as anxiety and burnout too. Faulting individuals for a broken society is not the move. I still believe UBI is a good idea. It could also support people to get professional help and take some of the shame away. Shame and guilt is what fuels addiction and makes people too stubborn to get help.

Rise of the bum class! So as women were freed to enter the labour market in the mid sixties these men took the opportunity to leave and spend their time on themselves and contributing nothing to their homes or communities.
Prime age 54? no.. a man's prime is his late teens to early 20's. Because they don't look after themselves like women do. Women preserve their looks in their early teens while men do nothing but assume money will give them al the women they want. Nope women are getting smarter. only sugar daddies are worthy of something when they are over 20. There is a biological prime and a financial prime. Men peak at late teens to early 20's and after 25 it's downhill for them. If they don't have a lot of money before their biological prime ends then they have nothing to offer.
Weed them out and let them die alone. Only women deserve love because they are the ones who do more in the relationship to make it work and raise the children mostly alone and the partner who does the least amount of efforts aka men need to earn love.
