The uproar surrounding the Roby & Melody Johnson case reveals the glaring sexism in the news coverage. Domestic abuse is unequivocally wrong, yet where is this chorus of outrage for the massive amount of domestic and sexual abuse even for female military members?
Having been stationed at the same base in Germany during the period they were there makes the sexism of the new coverage feel more personal. The outcry over Roby Johnson being asked to provide evidence of abuse reeks of sexism. For decades, women have faced similar demands from law enforcement, often at the risk of their safety. The core of the outrage isn't about advocating for all victims of domestic violence to be believed; it's the perceived injustice of a man being treated the same way as a woman.
Redditors have gone to great lengths to make up facts regarding Roby Johnson's account to support their outrage for him. One of the rumors on base is she started poisoning him because she found out that he was having an affair. If the comment section were to treat Roby Johnson like a woman, then how many would be asking him what he did to deserve it and further victim blaming?
Roby Johnson's failure to seek medical attention for poisoning, coupled with his delayed action in presenting evidence, raises some serious questions. This isn’t just a couple of weeks, this is around a year of doing nothing, not even telling co-workers. Moreover, he could have easily initiated proceedings to have Melody and their children sent back to the U.S. through an Early Return of Dependents, yet he chose not to.
Reddit threads are rife with armchair psychology, attempting to normalize Roby's behavior as typical of abuse victims. The underlying sexism is hard to ignore. Where were these voices when countless women suffered assaults or deaths by their husbands? Have they known this information all along?
Legally, spouses like Melody couldn't take their children out of Germany without Roby's permission or a court custody agreement, without committing international kidnapping. There were frequent posts on spouse forums across Germany detailing the struggles of women trapped in divorces, unable to return to the U.S. or live separately from their divorcing spouse due to institutional red tape.
It's also worth noting the severe lack of mental health care for spouses at the bases where they were stationed. Despite official Air Force policy suggesting otherwise, the reality was little to no support available. To make matters worse, if spouses advocated to get mental health services too loudly, they could be forced back to the US without their children for their own “good”
This man chooses to live with someone actively posting him, and even moved back to the US with them and still is living with her. While poisoning is undoubtedly wrong, imagine what the media would do if the genders were reversed. Can someone start copying and pasting comments from stories on abusive women to this news story and see what happens? The disparity in coverage and public response is proof that the patriarchial thinks women deserve and cause their own abuse.
Men are seen as humans by default but women are seen as the scapegoat and property. From the bible to feminism women are to blame for everything, and Women get the blame for everything that happens to them.
This is why women need to stop forgiving men, When a man's personal pictures get leaked he is a victim but if a woman had that it its her fault for having these pictures on her personal phone.
Men are never told they chose to stay, or need to choose better, or that it's their fault when they are abused.
Parents are never praised for over sheltering and overprotecting sons but are called responsible when they do that to girls.
Stop forgiving men, Men claim we need to take accountability every time men create unfairness for us, so as a woman you should comply and take accountability by not forgiving men and kick them to the curb when they act out.
Don't give second chances, don't be the bigger person. Stay angry.
the 4B movements makes males furious because that's not their version of accountability but instead you need to kiss every frog until you find the prince. To go through the trash until you find something value.
But true accountability is remove yourself from men, give birth to baby girls only, deny them sex or a legacy, deny them barbera the builder wife and just stay away from them.
Let Men fix their own loneliness epidemic, they thought they were the prize so let them look after themselves.
