"New data from tech job search platform Otta reveals that women job candidates provide lower minimum salary requirements than men. According to Otta cofounder and CEO Sam Franklin, the discrepancy can’t be explained by fewer women seeking the highest-paying technical positions".

I will always remember the last company I worked for and how I discussed with my colleague how much I asked for when applying for a promotion. He was appalled and told me to ask for more. The manager just wanted me gone really since I showed him up for being an idiot, so he never gave me the job. He did me a favour that day though. I left. Three months later, I was earning more than double what I asked for. 6 months later, I was earning more than that.
It's a lot more complicated than "women just need to ask for more money and negotiate better and they will be paid the same", though.
If a woman asks for the same amount of money a man with the same qualifications would demand in her place she will very often be seen as greedy, arrogant and overestimating her value and will either be lowballed or simply not hired/promoted. The whole "she should have just asked" puts the blame on the women for not "communicating" (remind you of something?), not the people who pay these women less because they can while fully knowing that they actually deserve more money.
It's easy to follow the "negotiate harder and demand more money" advice if you have a lot of options and can walk away from a job offer because there are a dozen more. But that's not the case for many, many women who simply need a job to pay their rent and are forced to settle for less than they are worth.
Very helpful as I am trying to change career into tech.
