Random question. But studying to become a nurse (UK). I'm four years into my degree and want to do my masters qualification afterwards. But it's also been a long wish to have a tattoo sleeve, which I'm starting this month. I'm worried however that being female and having visible tats that this could affect my employment chances within the clinical field. I've read somewhere that different clinical trusts have different rules on this but it is ok if they aren't offensive tattoos. I know that policies my say it's ok but is it really?! Like do you think there could be discrete discrimination?? I hope this isn't the case :(

I work in healthcare , and I’m covered (including hands). Another option is getting an under scrub (Adar makes awesome long sleeves to go under) I have never had issues getting jobs (even new to the field). A lot of the nurses I know have even more tattoos than I do. I’d avoid neck and face tattoos though. I personally don’t like them and they are not hideable. It’s awesome because there are not many healthcare workers so you can look how you want. If your place of employment wants you to cover up, you can! Get those tattoos 😊
I’m in the UK and had a procedure recently. My nurse spotted my small visible tattoo and used it as something to discuss to take my mind off it. She was wearing a long sleeved top and rolled it up to show me a similar one on her arm full of them. My main thought is how would anyone know? Everyone I know with sleeves wears formal clothes to interviews.
I'm in healthcare, NHS for 16 years. Currently lead researcher for a national dementia programme. I am covered in tattoos and just don't even acknowledge them. Tattoos are quite common with nurses these days, I wouldn't worry!
Uh, it makes it hard for men who have visible tattoos- it def makes it hard for women as well. You'll typically have to keep it covered while at work. The only people in scrubs I've seen who are allowed to have visible tattoos are vet techs (bc animals can't tell) *And the only way those vet techs get promoted is if they go to vet school so they can cover their sleeves with a white coat
UK here and I think you will be fine with a sleeve, as long as you are comfortable covering them up while at work. I have tattoos and make sure they are not visible when I am working, as a way to give HR less ammunition against me.
I am not in the health sector though, so it might be different rules there. I know they are desperate for nurses at the moment, which might give you more leeway.
Hi. I have been working as a nurse in Scandinavia. Not sure how it is different from the UK. BUT, there is no discrimination against nurses with tattoo sleeves. I have never seen any of my former colleagues being discriminated regarding work, or getting a position. However, many of the elderly patients have made many comments. Some rude, some just curious.
I would say, go for it. What matters is your work performance. And most employeers care most about that. If the employeers dont care most about that, then you know what kind of employeer you have...
Thank you everyone for your comments x
