I have an interview on Tuesday for a Data Entry/Customer Service position. The salary for this position is $50,000-$65,000 which is definitely more than what I'm currently making. I have called out so many times this year plus I took 3 weeks off in January when I had surgery. I hate calling out because I my coworkers have to cover for me, and I always hear from HR that I'm the receptionist and my position is important, etc. When I text my boss I usually say that I'm not "feeling well". Usually he'll text back "OK, feel better".
The last time I called out was 2 months ago because I had an interview and I told my boss I had a "family emergency". I really want a new job, but I hate calling out. My plan this time is to tell my boss that I have a family emergency again, but I will be coming in late just so I don't miss another day.
What do you guys think I should do?
I also want to add that I live in NYC. Where this job is located, my commute will be shorter which is a plus for me.
Edit: I asked this question on a site called FairyGodBoss. Maybe it's just me, but the person who responded sounded a little judgemental. The second screenshot is my reply to her.
Edit: Some of these comments are not helping. I already feel guilty enough.
Update: I did not get the job. I was told in an email they decided to go with someone else.
Isn't that just how you do it?
I have honestly never had an interview that was scheduled outside of normal business hours because that's when the new employer does business, too. Not doing that would mean overtime for all of the people involved in the interview.
Taking time off for a job interview is totally normal and nothing to feel guilty about. Just tell your boss you have an appointment. If they get nosy, say you are going to the dentist or something.
Lol the FairyGodBoss responder is weird. When I was conducting interviews we always scheduled them during our business hours...which were everyone's business hours. People take time off to do interviews, that's how it works. Also it's not like you told your boss that you lied about the family emergency, and you didn't tell your interviewer that you lied about the family emergency, so there's no one to question your "honesty". People lie to take time off work all the time; you're not the first and you won't be the last. It would be different if you lied about a family emergency and then posted pictures all over the internet of the crazy wild party you went to.
If it were me, I would give my boss a head's up and say "I will be out on xx day and time because I have an appointment." If they push you for what the appointment is (which is illegal, and they shouldn't), you can just say it's a doctor's appointment.
You have to do what you have to do. Lying sucks, letting down your team sucks, but that's life. No one will die because you took time off work, even though sometimes bosses like to act like it. Take care of yourself; your team will figure it out.
Can you say you have an urgent medical appointment and do a half day? My sister did quite a bit when she was interviewing.
Do you have to always give a reason like that? I usually said I had personal appointments.
The intention of my comment is to absolve you of your guilt . I don't think you should feel bad and I don't think this is a big deal. You should ruthlessly pursue whatever is in your best interests. If you die tomorrow, then the company will just post another listing for your job. At the end of the day you're just another statistic and meaningless to the company. American companies love to squeeze every last drop of blood out of you. When I first moved to this a country I was so confused as to why so many people struggled with mental health issues and depression. Then I started working and I finally understood why. Laws here are written in favor of the employer and not the employee. HR is to protect the company. Taking time off work for surgery should not be seen as problematic. I am so glad that I work for a German company. Because working for American companies gave me depression, weight gain, stress, trauma, mental and emotional anxiety. The abuse I took working in American companies from higher ups felt exactly the same as when I was in a relationship with a diagnosed narcissist. Exactly the same. I have the same standards for work that you do with scrotes. Unfortunately it's not as easy to block and delete shitty NV jobs. But definitely never feel bad about doing what it takes to find one that makes you happy, lets you take enough time off work etc. So many Americans are brainwashed to be workplace Pickmes. I could never find it in me to feel bad about doing what you did. Not anymore. These companies are out here leaving people in need of therapy for the depression and mental health issues the inflict on them, they will also perform massive layoffs at any time, without remorse. Lying in comparison about why you need a day off is insignificant. My friend developed neck issues from being a scribe. In uni I worked 16 hour shifts as a waitress without breaks and we were not allowed to sit down. We would get into trouble for that. Cashiers are also not allowed to sit down. As for the corporate American jobs I had after uni, those were worse than any retail or hospitality job I ever had. Love my current German company based in the US as we don't need to explain why we need time off unless it's more than 3 weeks. They give you medical leave too. Find a better company. Do whatever it takes because you deserve it.
Ignore those lousy people. Your only responsibility is to yourself and your family, not your employer.
I would book the half day off in advance for a "dental appointment" so it looks legit. Then you've got a built in excuse for next time.
For phone interviews, I would book the conference room or sneak off to a quiet place "for a call"
Do a half day. They'll never suspect you're leaving lol. I hope you get the job.
Why not just let them know you're taking the morning off for an appointment ?
That way you don't have to use the family emergency excuse again. Also I don't think most employers believe this. Maybe if it's used once.
Whenever I've had an interview I'd try to schedule a time that worked with my current job or if that didn't work, I'd just tell them I had a dentist/doctor appointment and I'd be late coming in.
